Historical Facts Friday--Boiler Corner

Did You Know?

One of Marietta's most unique landmarks once sat at the busy intersection of Greene, Front, and Ohio Streets, an area that became known as Boiler Corner.

In the 1810s, Major John Lawrence Lewis ordered a large iron boiler from an eastern foundry, likely in Pittsburgh. When the boiler arrived in Marietta, Lewis failed to pay the freight charges. Dudley Woodbridge, a local merchant whose store stood nearby, paid the bill and placed the boiler against the south wall of his store while waiting for reimbursement or a buyer.

Years passed, and the boiler remained in place. What began as an abandoned piece of equipment soon became a familiar gathering spot where residents shared stories, caught up on local news, and rested while waiting for ferry boats crossing the Ohio River.

The boiler eventually became such a well-known landmark that the area earned the name Boiler Corner. Today, the boiler remains buried beneath the riverfront area near the historical marker, preserving a small piece of Marietta's early riverfront history beneath our feet.

Have you ever visited Boiler Corner or noticed the marker along the riverfront?
