How The Cuckoo’s Nest Came To Be

The Cuckoo’s Nest gained its nomenclature because, well, we are a little cuckoo!! Heather is also quite the bird lover, but that’s a little secondary to our penchant for doing things a little “differently” than the average person.

First of all, I agreed to buy this house WITHOUT EVEN SEEING IT!!! Heather and I had been talking about buying a place in the Asheville area because we love it so much. Then, one weekend while she and the boys were up there, I got a message stating that she had found “the” house. Luckily, we tend to have the same taste, and I know that once she has found what she wants there’s no going back. So, I began to sign more pieces of paper than I have ever signed in my life.

We got more and more excited as we thought we were getting closer and closer to owning our own little piece of the mountains! Oh, and let’s not forget, that we don’t even own the home we live in, but we wanted a place in the mountains!! In fact, we wanted a place so much that we sold our little 22’ Catalina sailboat, Sunshine Daydream, in order to offset the cost of the house. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “wow, a sailboat must be expensive”, but ours was not. Nor did we get a lot of money for it, but the upkeep and ongoing dockage fees would offset the expense of a mortgage. Are you starting to see the pattern of stubbornness and determination?

As I said, we thought we were getting closer and closer, thousands of dollars of repairs, more signing of papers (yes, more and more and more), numerous extensions from the sellers while the bank kept asking for additional things to be done, had moved in furniture, bought firewood, purchased kerosene, until, finally, almost four months into the transaction, the bank said, “we can’t write your loan because the house is too old.” Yes, you read that correctly. Needless to say, we were completely devastated and unsure what to do next. However, I think I mentioned before that we are a little stubborn. The search for a new lender was ON!

After what seemed like hundreds of calls, we found a lender who would write on our tiny, little, OLD, house, and, guess what, I signed more papers!!! This actually went much quicker because we had just gone through the entire process. Finally, on December 8, 2017, we CLOSED on our house that we had fought tooth and nail to make sure we got. As would only be fitting, we got snowed in that weekend and spent the whole time finally able to relax by the wood burning stove drinking wine in the house that we love so much!!

Unfortunately, we don’t get to spend as much time at the Cuckoo’s Nest as we would like. We don’t want the house to just sit empty! It is in such a great location to enjoy all the area has to offer; we decided to rent it! We hope you enjoy our attention to all the details to make this your “home away from home,” too.
