For wild mushroom lovers, September and October offer prime hunting for another one of nature's delicacies— the sheepshead mushroom. Ok, the king of all wild edible mushrooms is arguably the morel. But sheepsheads run a close second in their taste, and they are a lot easier to find. Here are a few tips that will help you put some wild mushrooms on the table this fall.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR
The Sheepshead mushroom, also known as Hen-of-the-Woods, or Kareen, has a very spongy texture and grows in somewhat of a bracket style. Unlike conventional umbrella mushrooms that consist of a single stem with a cap, the sheepshead mushroom grows in a clump, with many stems and smoky-brown petals emerging from a white central base. There are several varieties of sheepsheads, but most of them have the appearance of the top of a sheep’s head—hence the name. They vary in size ranging from two to three inches to as large as two to three feet in diameter.

From Fred Krause of The Times:

Hunting report

• The early Canada goose season concluded Sept. 15 statewide. Many hunters limited out over the first three days. After that the birds get educated and are very hard to decoy.

• The mourning dove seasons is in full swing and hunters have had good shooting near sunflower fields and gravel pits.

Fishing report

• River fishing has been only fair last week on river systems. Even with live bait, many species seemed absent. Farm ponds are still productive for pan fish and bass. I had one report that crappies are hitting at Shabbona Lake in DeKalb County.

• FRED KRAUSE, of Marseilles, can be reached by emailing [email protected].

Busy summer so far. Corn is planted in the surrounding fileds, should impact the amount of geese we see later in the fall season. I did see 2 deer on my last visit, I hope that's a good sign.

Not too sure about how much I enjoy it, but the grass is growing and the mower is ready!
