While repairing some plaster at the inn today, 2 types of lath were discovered, a sawn lath (left) and an accordion lath (right) which tell a story of historic home building methods and their evolution.

According to “Preserving Your Old House: A Publication of the Society of Preservation of New England Antiquities”, the accordion lath method dates 1725-1825 “or so”, and the sawn lath dates to anytime after 1825. For the accordion method, wood rivens would be split on the edges, then stretched, and dried for installation. Due to the innovation of sawmill technology around 1825, the sawn lath method became more popular due to the consistency in lath thickness and width.

A neat find today in and grateful the wall in the stairwell has been repaired ✨
