Bird's Nest B&B

Bird's Nest B&B The Birds Nest a HomeStay accommodation Most Notable for Birders and other nature enthusiast Birders need not venture far to get life lists.

This luxurious and private suite is designed to suit all travelers but especially notable for birders and nature enthusiast. The Birds Nest room includes full bath, queen size bed, comfy sitting area and storage. With it's own private entrance separate from the main house, this room offers the utmost in privacy. The room is attached by a large common area to a well appointed 4 bedroom home remodel

ed in 2006. The home has hardwood and satillo tile floors, 3 gorgeous patios, large open windows and beautiful details. We have two other bedrooms in the house and still off of this master patio, please ask if you have a large party. The common area has everything you could possible need for a long or short stay including a fridge and kitchen cupboard for food storage, coffee and tea service, toaster, Forman's grill and more. An ample continental breakfast and other goodies are provided daily. Located in the heart of the McAllen, this full acre property is surrounded by a brick fence making it a lovely oasis in the city. We are birders and our neighborhood is often on the birding festival tours with lots of mature trees and natural habitat. We have a bird condo on the property (essentially a dead palm with holes bored out for birds' nests) that houses innumerable bird species including -- swear it -- a pair of Red-crowned Parrots (seasonal), not Parakeets. My official Backyard Bird Count currently stands at over 30 different species; some of which are South Texas specialities like Green Parakeets, Kiskadee, and Chachalaca. We have a 3" Celestron Telescope that we are happy to share with guest for some close up birding and if you are lucky and we get clear skies, we might be able to do some deep sky observing. Birding festivals are ongoing here; South Texas is the New Birding Mecca. With massive migratory periods. We also have butterfly and dragonfly festivals throughout the year, plus The World Birding Center with excellently managed nature centers too numerous to list. Your host knows them all. Winter is simply stunning here! McAllen is close to South Padre Island, for excellent fishing, kite boarding and more. Many well known ranches in South Texas offer private day trips for phtographers. Our area is a vibrant, growing metro with access to many activities and shopping galore. Don't waste your time looking anywhere else, this is THE PLACE you want to be! Your host is a blogger, The Urban Birder, for the McAllen Convention and Visitor's Bureau. You can read about my exploits in urban birding on my blog http://birdingmecca.wordpress.com/at and on twitter at UrbanBirderST, Google + Urban Birder

Re-sharing this in anticipation of another Fall-out this year in South Texas. Haven't attempted to id any birds nor have I edited the camera roll. This way, I think you'll get a good idea of the madness of a fallout.

My husband and I saw our 1st Fall-out last year at the end of April and with winter being as unpredictable as it has this year I am really anticipating that we might just get another fall-out this year.

Book you next birding with us now!

I am not even attempting to identify any of these birds are you will see there are just too many -- if you what like an id for a particular photo, give a shout. I, also, did not edit any photos, these are just as they came off my camera. I think that doing it this way will give you a real idea of what it's like to see a fallout. Madness!

Not only are they among the smallest birds, they are the only avian helicopters capable of sustained hovering in place and flying backwards. Their small size belies their toughness – many hummingbirds migrate long distances and must eat several times their weight in nectar daily to stay alive. Their...
