Today’s highlighted team member is Matt Krepps, our general manager. Matt started his restaurant career about 30 years ago as a 16-year-old grill cook and cashier at McDonald's. He then moved onto Applebee’s during college where he continued to learn about the front and back of houses. During his early 20's, he served and bartending at different places.
We need to give credit to Matt’s dad, Guy, for Matt joining our family. Guy saw an advertisement for a new place opening up in downtown Harrisburg in 1998 but Matt had already accepted a job in York. In 2001 Matt decided to see what Harrisburg had to offer. He applied at The Iron Kettle, (a major part of Stephen’s story), and Stock’s on 2nd. He worked at both for about a month but then decided that Stock’s was the place for him. Matt started as a server in our family while KJ was at home with baby Carter. Funny story how Stephen kept promoting Matt but KJ still hadn’t met him. Ask one of them the next time you are in. So, Matt continued to be promoted in the company. He not only ran shifts in the restaurants but ran catering events as well.
Before COVID, catering took up most of Matt’s time. So which does he like better? He answered, “Honestly I like everything. I think the fact that Stock’s offers such a variety of things has helped with longevity, not just for me, but for many employees who have spent 10 plus years with us. That isn’t something you see in this industry”.
Over the years Matt has helped our family grow with opening Stock’s Manor and expanding our catering side of the company. When COVID hit, Matt, Michael, William, Jessie, Johnny, KJ, Stephen, Carter and Ashley all masked up and learned how to operate a food truck. Not to mention our favorite Saturday night pastime, Cooking with Jessie. Matt answered online questions, printed recipes, helped with the rest of us prep, send out emails, pack up and run the bags to your cars. We all pulled together to make sure all of our families would make it through COVID. Matt feels that the solid reputation of the restaurants and catering is what helped us survive when many didn’t.
Matt has become a brother to many of us and we asked if he had any funny memories. He said that he shouldn’t share here but he would share some pranks he pulled on Michael over a couple of beers if you would like to hear them. Which brings us to his favorite memories. He loves going on catering trips, (Hawaii here we come in a couple of weeks), late night exhilaration of a packed bar at 1 am, or the quiet before a breakfast event.
Matt is hoping that his future holds golfing and maybe teaching grandchildren his favorite pastime. He would also like to thank everyone for the support over the years.
KJ and Stephen love all their Stock’s family members bur feel that Matt is their brother and are grateful for all his hard work over the many years.
