Most visitors see an old stone building.

Few realize it was once connected to the Buffalo Soldiers who served at Fort Sill in the late 1800s.

The Guard House is one of those places that quietly tells a story. A story of military service, frontier history, and the soldiers who helped shape this region long before it became a destination for visitors from around the country.

It’s a reminder that some of the most fascinating places in the Wichita Mountains region aren’t found on a trail—they’re found in the stories still standing today.

Bison safety isn’t just a rule.

It’s what keeps the Wichita Mountains wild.

One of the most memorable parts of visiting the refuge is seeing bison roaming the landscape. Giving them plenty of space helps protect both visitors and wildlife while preserving the experience for everyone.

Wild bison are powerful, unpredictable animals, and the best wildlife encounters happen when they’re observed from a safe distance.
