Before there was a United States, there was an Army.
On June 14, 1775, more than a year before the Declaration of Independence was signed, the Continental Congress voted to create the Continental Army to defend the colonies. That decision marked the birth of what would become the United States Army.
Some fascinating Army facts:
⭐ The Army is one year older than the United States itself.
⭐ The Army’s birthday and Flag Day both fall on June 14th.
⭐ The first Commander of the Continental Army was George Washington, appointed just one day after the Army was created.
⭐ Since 1775, American Soldiers have served through the Revolutionary War to today around the world. The US Army flag is adorned with 190 campaign streamers 🤯 each representing a recognized military campaign or operation in Army history. Between combat operations, peacekeeping, disaster relief, humanitarian aid, training exercises, evacuations, and security assistance- the Army’s total number of operations is well into the thousands! Nevermind the ones that have and still happen in the dead of night, without making headlines. 😉
⭐ The Army’s official motto is “This We’ll Defend.” It has been used since the Revolutionary War.
For more than 250 years, generations of Soldiers have answered the call to serve, defend freedom, support their communities, and protect the nation.
Today we honor the courage, sacrifice, dedication, and legacy of every Soldier—past and present!

Fun fact: The Army’s oldest active infantry unit, the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), traces its lineage back to 1784 and still serves today as the Army’s ceremonial unit at places like Arlington National Cemetery. We visited them, just last June, and got some amazing footage of the Old Guard. Stop in to the store this week- we’re always up for swapping amazing stories!
