During Tuesday night's State of the Union address, House Speaker Mike Johnson will display the gavel used by George Washington to lay the cornerstone of the U.S. Capitol building in 1793, according to the U.S. Capitol Historical Society. The gavel is housed in the oldest Masonic lodge in Washington. Its use is meant to mark the nation's 250th anniversary.

The beauty of Freemasonry lies in the fact that it is a "system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols." While the rituals performed within the tiled doors of a Lodge are steeped in tradition, their true value isn't found in the performance itself, but in how those lessons are "lived out" once the Lodge is closed.

Masonic ritual serves as a psychological and spiritual "rehearsal" for life. Every step taken on the checkered pavement represents the journey of the human soul through the various stages of existence.

The candidate enters in a state of darkness, stripped of all "worldly possessions." We are reminded that true character is not defined by wealth, rank, or social status. In daily life, this translates to approaching every person with genuine humility and judging others by their internal merit rather than their external circumstances.

Each degree introduces specific working tools—the 24-inch gauge, the common gavel, the square, and the compasses. These aren't just historical artifacts; they are metaphors for self-discipline.

Being a mason is 24/7 commitment. The ritual provides the map, but you must do the walking.

When you leave the Lodge, you are the living representative of those ancient ceremonies. If the ritual teaches you to be upright, your neighbors should see that uprightness in your business dealings. If it teaches you silence and circumspection, your friends should find a trustworthy confidant in you.

"The secrets of Freemasonry are not those hidden in books or passwords, but the secret transformations that occur within the heart of the man who truly understands the ritual."

God bless brethren and may we govern ourselves accordingly.

Dallas lodge heard about these folks whose building partially collapsed during the recent snow/ice storm and sprung into action. Brothers Bill Scott, Charlie Ford, Ethan Rawlings and Trey Youngdahl safely dismantled the damaged structure for free to help this family.

Luckily, there was only minor damage to the two motorcycles that were housed under the awning.

This is what Masons do. We are brothers not only to each other, but to our community as well!

February 8, 1910: The Boy Scouts of America (Scouting America) was incorporated in Washington, D.C. Among the BSA founders was Daniel Carter Beard. He had established the Sons of Daniel Boone youth program in 1905, which merged into the BSA.
The Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouter Award is named in his honor.
