The Mendocino Hotel is the only remaining hotel dating from the 1800s logging trade when Mendocino village was 20,000 people strong. The original structure (built in 1878) remains today encompassing the lobby, lobby bar, dining room, kitchen and the 2nd and 3rd floor guest rooms. The Mendocino Hotel originally opened as the The Temperance House. It was considered "the one bastion of good Christian
morals in a town of loggers." Peterson purchased the run-down hotel and retained a cadre of designers and local artisans and craftsmen to authentically restore it. Peterson gave the designers carte blanche to purchase as many period antiques as they felt were necessary to give the Hotel the right atmosphere. Approximately 90% of all the pieces date to late 19th century, the other 10% were commissioned especially for the hotel. In keeping with the antiques, we are rumored to have a few old guests who have never checked out. A Victorian era woman who haunts tables 6 and 8 in our Victorian Dining Room also wanders the lobby and occasionally whispers the names of the front desk staff. There seem to be others, but she is the most active. Aside from the main hotel, we offer 25 Garden Rooms offering a couple pet friendly guest rooms, gorgeous ocean view suites, ample parking and event space.
