Some landscapes ask you to look. This one makes you stop.

The Mendocino Coast feels almost impossibly large up close: cliffs dropping into the Pacific, waves breaking against rock, fog shifting across the horizon.

There’s a certain kind of silence that happens when a place is this beautiful. You stop talking. You look longer. You remember how big and beautiful the world is.

A room to come back to. A coast worth wandering. Bikes, pizza, railbikes, w**e, and at least one detour that wasn’t on the itinerary.

Whale watching in Mendocino is mostly an exercise in paying attention. Scan the horizon first, then reach for the binoculars. Watch for spouts, changes in the water, and flocks of seabirds gathering offshore. And give it time. 🌊🐋✨

Different whales move through the Mendocino Coast at different points of the year, which means there’s often something worth looking for beyond the obvious peak moments. Gray whales are most commonly seen from November through May, humpbacks from April through November, and blue whales from June through October. Orcas are less predictable.

March is especially good whale-watching season on the Mendocino Coast, but the best strategy is refreshingly simple: find a good coastal viewpoint, bring layers and snacks, and stay awhile.

Consider this your picnic headquarters. 🍷🧺

Hill House W**e & Grocer is stocked for the kind of Mendocino afternoon that’s better without much of a plan: local w**e, cheese, charcuterie, snacks, blankets and everything you need to put together a picnic of your own.

Take it out to the lawn, bring it along for an afternoon by the coast, or pour something from Anderson Valley and settle in for sunset. There’s even a Trailborn w**e carrier and w**e key waiting in your room for adventures farther afield.

Our recommendation: choose the w**e first. Build the afternoon from there.

Walk along bluffs with the Pacific crashing below, wander through otherworldly dunes, follow the Big River inland, or trade the coastline for ferns, waterfalls, and towering redwoods.

These are five of our favorite trails for seeing just how much the landscape can change within a few miles. Save them for your next trip north. 🌲🌊

W**e Country starts in the lobby at Hill House W**e & Grocer🍷

One of the perks of being in Mendocino: some very good w**e is being made just down the road.

Anderson Valley is close enough for an afternoon of wandering between tasting rooms and vineyards, but you don’t necessarily need a reservation or a full itinerary to start getting to know what’s made here.

That’s part of what we love about staying at Hill House. W**e country and the coast get to be part of the same trip. Spend the afternoon among the vines, make it back to Mendocino before sunset, and wake up the next morning with the Pacific outside.

We know a few good places to send you when you’re ready to explore. Until then, Anderson Valley is pouring downstairs.🍷
