This guy's been here longer than California has been a state.

Acorn Woodpeckers are year-round residents of the California coast — they don't migrate, they don't leave. Their family groups can occupy the same territory for generations, sometimes the same granary tree for 50+ years. eBird database has documented this species in Mendocino County for decades.
Which is to say: we're guests in his territory. Not the other way around.
We're fine with that.

Acorn Woodpeckers don't do solo. They live in tight family groups of up to a dozen birds — siblings, parents, cousins, the whole operation — sharing food, territory, and chick-rearing duties.
calls this "cooperative breeding," which is the scientific term for absolute chaos with shared custody.
What we're seeing at the bird bath isn't one woodpecker. It's a small, well-dressed gang. We've counted at least four. There are almost certainly more in the trees we haven't met yet.

Our garden has been quietly annexed.

A new guy found here, unbothered, and somehow still the most interesting thing in the garden. Let's talk about why. 🪶

🔵 Blue head & wings → "I didn't come to blend in"
🤎 Rusty brown back → the one unexpected detail that makes the whole look work
⚪ White eyebrow stripe → sharp, clean, no notes
🩶 Grey underside → "I'm elegant, not extra"

If you've ever wondered why the California Scrub-Jay looks this put-together without trying, the answer is: it's not vanity, it's survival. notes that these bold markings help individuals signal status and territory — which explains why this one strutted into our garden like he owned the place.

He's drilling the deadlines, like literally!

Have you noticed that his face is doing a lot. Let's break it down. 🪶
🔴 Red cap → adult male
⚪ White forehead → "I'm dressed up"
🟡 Yellow throat → "I'm an Acorn Woodpecker, in case anyone forgot"
⚫ Black mask → the look of a bird who is Very Serious about acorn storage
If you've ever wondered why Acorn Woodpeckers look like that, the answer is: evolution decided their face needed to be visible from across a forest. notes that these markings help them recognize each other in their tight-knit family groups and broadcast identity from 100 feet up in the canopy.

Basically, he's wearing a uniform. And he wears it well.

A single Acorn Woodpecker family can drill 50,000 acorns into one tree — and remember exactly where every one is.

Meet our newest regular: red cap, clown face, and according to Acorn Woodpeckers are such unusual birds with such complicated social behavior that they have given rise to one of the longest-running behavioral studies of birds.
He's been holding court at the bird bath every morning while our guests have breakfast three feet away.

A few more things....🪶
→ They live in cooperative family groups of up to a dozen birds
→ They share one "granary tree" — basically a wooden vault, fully stocked
→ They've called the California coast home longer than California has been a state
