🥧 Week 22 | Sweet Home Alabama, TWO Pies for the Yellowhammer State!

This week we are celebrating our home state, and of course we had to give it a double feature!

Alabama became the 22nd state in 1819, and North Alabama was at the heart of that early American hunger for new land and new beginnings. Settlers poured across the Appalachians seeking exactly what this state promised: fertile land, fresh starts and freedom. The Creek Indians of this region had already negotiated one of the very first treaties with the US government in 1790, making Alabama part of the American conversation from the very beginning.  🇺🇸

First up, “Stars Over Alabama”  blackberry pie! The blackberry is Alabama’s official state fruit, and this year our very own wild blackberries growing at the B&B made it into this pie. From the vine to the crust, there’s something about picking berries steps from your own kitchen that makes every bite taste a little sweeter. 🫐✨

Our second pie this week is banana pudding pie, and if that sounds like the best idea you’ve heard all week, you are absolutely right. All the warmth and nostalgia of Southern banana pudding, paired with the cool, creamy decadence of cold banana pudding, tucked into a pie. The recipe from Cook’s Country Episode 1512 completely nails it!

Tag a fellow Alabamian who needs both of these in their life! 🤍

🥧 Week 21 | Illinois — Pumpkin Pie 🎃

Did you know that Illinois produces 85% of the pumpkins consumed in the United States? We didn’t either, and it made this week’s pie choice feel like a no brainer!

Illinois became the 21st state admitted to the Union in 1818, and its fingerprints are all over the American story. It is the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln, who guided the nation through its most fractured and defining chapter, and home to Chicago, one of the great engines of American industry and immigration that welcomed waves of newcomers who each left something lasting on this country. 🇺🇸

It felt only right to take our recipe recommendation from the farmers who make pumpkins available to all of America. The folks at know a thing or two about pumpkins, and their recipe did not disappoint!

We will admit it feels a little funny making pumpkin pie in May! But Rachel stayed true to the recipe with one small addition: a quarter teaspoon of nutmeg pulled from her tried and true recipe box, and it made the whole kitchen smell like autumn. Classic, comforting, and exactly what a pumpkin pie should be.

We made pumpkin pie in May, and we are thankful. 🥧 Tag someone who would absolutely eat pumpkin pie in any season!

Week 20 | Mississippi Mud Pie! 🥧

Mississippi played a significant role during the American Revolution, primarily as a frontier region, with its location along the Mississippi River making it important for trade and military movements. After the Revolution, the territory achieved statehood in 1817. Its legacy since is defined by its position at the intersection of slavery, racial violence and civil rights activism, becoming the epicenter of the civil rights movement in the 1960s.

The Magnolia State is also renowned as the birthplace of the blues, and is characterized by a rich tapestry of cultures that contribute to its unique social fabric and traditions.
Mississippi’s contribution to music, its pivotal role in civil rights and its geographic significance collectively represent essential elements of the American experience! 🇺🇸

This week’s Mississippi Mud Pie recipe comes from 🍽️ The name derives from its appearance, with the baked chocolate layers resembling the thick muddy banks of the Mississippi River. Each layer is so texturally different and delicious, it’s hard to pick a favorite! This pie is a process, but absolutely worth the time and energy for that layered up chocolatey goodness.

Week 19 | Indiana — Hoosier Sugar Cream Pie 🥧

Indiana became the 19th state admitted to the Union in 1816, and its place in American history is significant. It played a key role in the War of 1812 and became a gateway state for settlers crossing the Appalachians in search of freedom, equality and a fresh start. Indiana also holds the distinction of being home to the first state university in the Northwest Territory, with Indiana University () founded in 1820, a testament to how seriously early settlers took the promise of a better future. 🇺🇸

And what better pie to represent that pioneer spirit than one born out of pure necessity? Hoosier Sugar Cream Pie, sometimes called “desperation pie,” became a staple of early Indiana kitchens precisely because it asked so little and delivered so much! No fresh fruit or eggs required, just pantry staples coming together into a dessert with a velvety, custard like filling in a buttery crust.

It is considered the unofficial state pie of the Hoosier State, and after making this recipe from Hoosier Cassie Johnston , we completely understand why. This one will absolutely be making a return appearance at the B&B. 😍

🥧 Week 18 | Louisiana — Two Pies for the Pelican State! 🦤🎷

Our America 250 pie journey continues, and Louisiana earned itself a double feature this week!

Louisiana holds a special place in American history as the first territory from the Louisiana Purchase to be formally welcomed into the Union, in April of 1812. And its revolutionary roots run deeper than most people realize! While under Spanish governance, Louisiana quietly supported American independence: its strategic port helped Patriots smuggle arms, and an active local militia championed the cause. 🇺🇸

First up, MawMaw’s Mayhaw Meringue Pie. If you’ve never heard of a Mayhaw, you’re not alone, but Louisiana locals know that the bright red berries from the native Mayhaw tree make one of the most beloved jellies in the South!

Turns out they make an incredible pie too. The meringue is just sweet enough, the custard is just tart enough, and our guests didn’t just try a slice, they went back for seconds. 😉 This straightforward and beautiful recipe from is one to save. 🍒

Our second pie this week is the Natchitoches Hand Pie, a Louisiana institution. We adapted the traditional meat pie filling by adding eggs and wrapping it all in a flaky, golden pocket of goodness, and it has officially made its way onto the B&B breakfast menu rotation! We were lucky enough to use a local sausage from and it made all the difference. 🥐

Now, about that name... Natchitoches? Go ahead and try it. “Nack-uh-dish”? “Naw-kee-tosh”? “Knock-i-tush”? However you say it, just know that every version is said with love down here. 😄

🥧 Week 17 | Ohio - Buckeye Pie 🌰

This week we are celebrating America 250 with a Buckeye Pie for the great state of Ohio! The pie draws its inspiration from the popular peanut butter candy that is dipped in chocolate to resemble a nut from the Buckeye tree, which is native to Ohio.

Few places have shaped the American story quite like Ohio. The “Mother of Presidents” has sent seven commanders-in-chief to the White House, served as a vital lifeline on the Underground Railroad, and gave the world the Wright Brothers. From the pursuit of freedom to the miracle of flight, Ohio’s fingerprints are all over this nation’s greatest chapters.

As Wilbur Wright once said, “𝘐𝘧 𝘐 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘥𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦, 𝘐 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘴𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘪𝘮, 𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘢 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘧𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘣𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘖𝘩𝘪𝘰.” 🇺🇸

This recipe comes to us from kitchen, and we love that her husband’s grandma’s recipe inspired the pie! This fun and easy no-bake creation is rich and creamy and eaten a sliver at a time, it has definitely been a favorite at the B&B! 🍫🥜

Week 16 | Tennessee — Buttermilk Chess Pie 🥧

Tennessee was the 16th state admitted to the Union in 1796, and its roots in American history run deep. It earned the nickname “The Volunteer State” during the War of 1812, and later sent more soldiers to the Civil War than any other Confederate state. But the story goes back even further. In 1772, Tennessee settlers created the Watauga Association, a bold early experiment in majority rule democracy that predated the Constitution by nearly two decades!

This week’s pie is as Tennessee as it gets. Buttermilk chess pie is timeless, a pantry dessert born out of necessity that has been gracing Southern tables for generations. We used this beautiful recipe from in Pigeon Forge, a Tennessee institution in its own right, and it did not disappoint! Chess pie is easy and straightforward to bake. The most challenging part of this recipe was the wait time while it rested before cutting and eating a slice!

Now, we’d be doing Tennessee a disservice if we didn’t mention its other famous pie 😉. The MoonPie was born in Chattanooga (just 40 minutes up the road from Bee on the Brow!) in 1917, and this little icon has been rolling off the line at Chattanooga Bakery for over 100 years. They currently produce a million of them every single day! 🌙 Tennessee knows how to commit to a good thing.

Next week we will shake things up with our first no bake pie of the year! A peanut butter and chocolate triumph, inspired by our next state’s nickname…

🥧 Week 15 | Kentucky — Kentucky Derby Pie 🐎🥃
Our America 250 pie journey rolls on, and this week Kentucky is in the spotlight!

Kentucky joined the Union in 1792 as the 15th state, making it the first state west of the Appalachian Mountains. A land of bluegrass, bourbon, and bold history, Kentucky was a fiercely divided border state during the Civil War, and both Abraham Lincoln AND Jefferson Davis were born within its borders. Kentucky has never been a state you could put in a simple box, and honestly, we love that about it.

Kentucky Derby Pie is as iconic as the race itself. The original recipe was created in 1954 by the Kern family at the Melrose Inn in Prospect, Kentucky, and walnuts were there from the very beginning. Unlike most southern pies that reach for pecans, walnuts provide a distinct texture that stays firm and crunchy even tucked inside that thick, gooey filling. Think of it as pecan pie’s more indulgent, chocolatey cousin. 🍫

We stayed true to tradition and used walnuts, and of course Kentucky bourbon made its way into the filling. This recipe from was straight forward to bake and delicious to eat. Walnuts and chocolate are a decadent combo and this pie convinced us Kentucky knows how to pie!
