Just a few minutes up the road! A great spot to visit anytime of year.
At Coos Canyon in Maine, you can cool off where the Swift River flows through a narrow, rocky gorge shaped over thousands of years by fast-moving water and ice. Steep canyon walls rise on both sides, with smooth, sculpted rock and pockets of deep, clear pools scattered between small drops and rushing sections of river. In summer, people spread out along the rocks, wade into the calmer spots, or jump into deeper holes where the current slows. The river here has long been known for gold panning, and small flakes are still found in the gravel by visitors today. A roadside rest area sits right above the canyon with picnic tables and quick access down to the water, making it an easy stop whether you’re staying a while or just passing through.
