When I acquired the house that would become the Red Maple Retreat, the kitchen and sunroom had recently been painted yellow. Although I wanted to repaint at that time, I had guests in need of a furnished rental who cared more about a roof over their head than the color of paint on the walls. I figured I’d repaint as soon as I had a long enough vacancy in-between guests.
That lengthy vacancy never happened…until recently.

When our last long-term guests departed, and with a confirmation of availability from my painter, I took the house off the market and we got busy.

Tomorrow we’ll be wrapping- up the house refresh that included new paint, new electrical outlets and switches, 3 new door handles and a bit of new decor - just in time for new guests checking-in this week!

When our welcome sign becomes a thank you sign…always a pleasure to see after our guests depart!

People often ask me who stays at the Red Maple Retreat since we transitioned to a medium-term rental (30 days or more) during the pandemic. Here’s a heartwarming example:

Our latest guests called us home for 14 months while their house was being restored after a fire. Initially staying in a hotel, they soon sought a furnished rental, wanting more space, the comforts of home and a flexible, open-ended lease. When other options fell short, they found us—a haven for families in transition.

Upon visiting, they fell in love with our cozy home and waited eagerly for it to become available. The joy on move-in day was palpable, as they settled into this home-away-from-home with two bedrooms, 2 baths, multiple living areas and plenty of private outdoor spaces.

Yesterday, they moved into their new house. It was bittersweet for all, but their gratitude reassured us that the Red Maple Retreat continues to be a peaceful sanctuary for those in need.
