Benevolent Lodge No. 3 F&AM

Benevolent Lodge No. 3 F&AM Freemasonry is the world’s oldest and largest fraternal and charitable organization. Benevolent Lodge No. 3 has a long and prestigious history. Pierce, P. L.

Since 1817, Benevolent Lodge No. 3 has had a long and prestigious history here in Milledgeville, Georgia. In 1827 the Benevolent Lodge was No. 9 in the list of Georgia Lodges. In December of 1829 the Grand Lodge constitution was amended and Benevolent Lodge No. 9 became No. 6 on the list until November 17, 1938 when the number was changed to No. 3. In 1827 there were two Blue Lodges in Milledgevil

le, Benevolent No. 9 and Fraternal No. 20. In October of 1828, by mutual agreement of both Lodges, they merged into one, Benevolent No. 9. In November of 1828 it was decided by the Lodge members to undertake the raising of funds to build a Masonic Hall by lottery. At the time the Lodge met in the Darien Bank Building. The State authorized the Lodge to raise, by lottery, the sum of $25,000 for construction of the Masonic Hall in the town of Milledgeville on December 9, 1828. The cornerstone for the Masonic Hall was laid June 25, 1832 by R.W. Samuel Rockwell, and assisted by William Davis, Thomas Greene, E .H. Wright, John Miller, Drury Murphy, John Mitchell, and William Hill. In June of 1834 the building of the Masonic Hall was complete and ready for occupancy. Judge I. Harris was the first Worshipful Master to serve in the new Lodge building.

Here is a picture of WB Adolph Joseph’s store, taken from the Milledgeville Time Machine page. WB Joseph served as Master of the Lodge from 1876-1885 consecutively. 10 straight years of governing the Lodge. His picture hangs proudly over our Secretary’s desk.

His store was located across the street from the Lodge building, currently occupied by Amici

Caption says “March 29, 1963. The last train in downtown Milledgeville.” As we all know Milledgeville was world famous for requiring a Train to obey traffic signals. I just loved how the Lodge was featured prominently in the background.

Regular Communication on August 20, 2024 with an Official Visitation from WB Benjamin W. Polston, II, Most Worshipful Grand Master of Masons in Georgia, along with several Grand Line Officers (RWJGW Brian C. Coffey, RWGT Jeff Anderson, GC Frank Batt, GM Mike Jones, GT Brad Johnson). There were also DDGM’s representing Districts 10, 6 & 8 in attendance as well as a multitude of our Brothers from Gordon Lodge #240 F&AM, Fergus Lodge No. 135, and Macon Lodge No. 5 and several Past Masters of the 10th District Convention! What a wonderful & exciting night of Freemasonry in the 10th District!

During the meeting MWGM Polston presented our Treasurer, Bro. Ed Moore, with his 50 year apron. The GM then presented our WM, J.E. Smith, and all sitting WM’s in attendance his coin.

Brethren, this is one of the local charity/organizations we support. For the past 2.5 years, we have given to this cause. At the last meeting we heard a Thank You card from Jessica Montgomery about how our funds were used to help a lady. Here is how the rest of the money is distributed and used. Each Brother should feel proud of the way their donations are being used in this community.

Regular Communication last night with an Official Visit from the District Deputy. There was a good turnout, with 7 Past Master’s and 3 Fifty Year Brethren in attendance! Our newly installed officers are showing their proficiency in the opening and closing! The School of Instruction is obviously paying off!

Our next meeting will be on February 3, 2024, at 7:30pm. If you come bring a little folding money with you, the Lodge is taking donations for a worthy Brother!
