NOTICE OF TRAIL CLOSURE:

Starting Friday, October 17th, all Katahdin and Traveler Loop trails are closed for the season. Snow is falling at high elevations in Baxter Park, with expected fluctuations between freezing and thawing temperatures in the coming days. This weather creates conditions that increase hiking's impact on alpine habitat and trails.

Please note this closure of the trailheads prevents access to the Owl Trail (via Hunt Trail/AT).

Today marks the beginning of the Katahdin 100 weekend for the Penobscot Nation. The Wabanaki Alliance wants to acknowledge the significance of this ceremony and honor the lasting legacy of many of the former and current participants.

The Katahdin 100 is an annual ceremonial journey from the Penobscot Nation to Katahdin, a place our ancestors named “Ktahten” which translates to Great Mountain. Katahdin is a place our people have always connected to for thousands of years.

The “K100” began in 1981 when Barry Dana, Penobscot Elder and Chief (2000-2004), felt a calling to complete the roughly 100 mile route through running the entire distance. He had long admired the traditional approach of our people to offer suffering as a sacrifice and a prayer to help all of humanity heal and withstand the pain and trauma we face together. He sought the help of two of his good friends Albert Sockbeson and Mark Ranco to drive him and care for him while he did the running. Barry’s mother, the late Lorraine Dana, was also an early and dedicated supporter of this sacred quest and remained an active participant into her 80s.

The late Reuben “Butch” Phillips and his son Scott Phillips joined Barry as family and a tradition of paddling the route from the Penobscot Nation to Millinocket up the main stem of the river was started. There are now war canoes and one or two paddler canoes along with occasional kayaks that make the journey each year. Other people make the trip by walking, hiking, biking, or being support crews. The journey ends with a communal celebration and ceremony.

Through diplomacy, advocacy, friendship, and persistence we have access to this ceremony as a closed Wabanaki event. Our people have ensured that the sacred messages carried to the mountain each year are ones of strength, hope, healing, and progress. Our sacrifices and prayers echo throughout time and our ancestors hear us best when we are so close to where they rest in this sacred part of our homelands. It gives us the needed connection and nourishment to keep fighting for our rights.

We wish you healing, peace, and love in all you do this weekend and we will carry these intentions with us.
