- Happy Monday! ☀ This week’s Campground Feature takes us to Chewonki's Big Eddy Campground in Millinocket, Maine ⛺ Located in the North Maine Woods, just 30 minutes from the south entrance to Baxter State Park, this peaceful riverside campground along the West Branch of the Penobscot River remains one of those rare places that seem unchanged by time 🌲🏕️

Big Eddy is considered a world-class site for native Landlocked Salmon and has been a destination for fishermen for at least 100 years 🎣 The road to Big Eddy is equally stirring, leading you deep into one of the most spectacular regions in New England—perfect for hiking, paddling, and truly disconnecting in Katahdin Country.

Summers in Maine are so quintessential, aren’t they? Here at Big Eddy, they are short and oh so sweet, and I hear my thought of “these are the days we wait for all winter long” on repeat in my mind. The campground has been extra busy and our days are full here, and that includes chatting and c...

It's felt like the summer of projects, and it's exciting!
Two campers generously donated their time and spent the last month making upgrades to some of our cabins. New windows, doors, exterior siding, and possibly the most exciting upgrade, a new porch at the Eddy Cabin!
All materials were paid for thanks to the Big Eddy Improvement Fund. So a BIG thank you to all of you who have contributed over the past few years.
More fun coming! Make sure to subscribe to our monthly newsletter to stay up-to-date. https://bigeddy.chewonki.org/subscribe/

Check it out! Some of our guests know Greg Shute, and some maybe don't. After 41 years, Greg retired from Chewonki in 2024 as their Director of Northern and Coastal Properties. He helped Sarah oversee Big Eddy and he still makes a trip or two up this way each summer. He was recently interviewed on the Friends of Baxter State Park Podcast. The episode offers a lovely background of Chewonki, conversation around getting youth outdoors, and even talks about the acquisition of Big Eddy!

In this conversation we talk to Greg Shute. Greg recently completed a 41 year career with the Chewonki Foundation. Greg is an expert at leading kids of all ages into the Maine wilderness in ways that keep them safe while challenging them and teaching them about wild places. He’s also a wonderful h...

Are you a member of the Natural Resources Council of Maine? If so, did you know that Big Eddy works in partnership with the organization to offer their members a discount on their stay here?

NRCM is Maine's leading organization protecting Maine's environment and natural resources. Their history of success dates back to 1966 with their involvement of protecting the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, and in 1986, they were part of defeating the Big A Dam project (which would have flooded where Big Eddy Campground stands today!).

So, if you are a NRCM member, reach out to them for a discount code. And if you aren't a member yet, check out their full list of membership perks below and consider becoming a member!
