Last summer, Pride of Baltimore II came up the Choptank River for a rendezvous with Skipjack Nathan of Dorchester. The weather was a touch overcast, but watching these two stunning vessels glide effortlessly along the river just off the shores of Cambridge was something truly special.
If you are looking for a fun and historic way to make memories with your loved ones, both ships offer walk on evening and summer cruises throughout the season. Also, be sure to check out the skipjack races, like the famous Choptank Heritage Skipjack Race in late September.
These vessels remain afloat through the blood, sweat, and tears of the hardworking volunteers who dedicate countless hours year-round to preserving a living piece of Chesapeake history. Their work often goes unseen, but it matters deeply.
One day soon, I hope to catch Pride II under full sail beneath one of those unforgettable Chesapeake sunsets. The color, the clouds, the glow on the water, scenes like that make these ships truly sing.
God bless all those who help preserve the Chesapeake Skipjack Fleet and Pride II of Baltimore. It is often thankless work, but I can assure you many of us across the Eastern Shore and Delmarva deeply admire and appreciate these beautiful ships and the stories they continue to carry forward.
“There are good ships and wood ships, ships that sail the sea, but the best ships are friendships, and may they always be.”
God bless the fleet, and cheers to a great week.
