After more than two decades of Alma and nearly as many years of Brasa, there’s a lot to look back on. But perhaps the more interesting question is what all those years can teach us about what comes next.

Alex Roberts is featured in TPT’s new Relish Presents series, reflecting on lessons learned, the wisdom worth carrying forward and the strength of the teams that have kept Alma and Brasa growing and evolving through the years.

Relish Presents: Taste and Renewal airs tomorrow, Saturday 8/22 at 10:30am on Twin Cities PBS, and will also be available on the PBS app and the Wonder & More YouTube channel.

We’re incredibly grateful to the Star Tribune for including Alma in its Culinary North Stars Hall of Fame. After all these years, it’s still a little hard to wrap our heads around being mentioned alongside so many restaurants and people we admire.

We’ve always believed that restaurants are a team effort. We simply try to take it one service, one dish, one conversation and one relationship at a time. Recognition like this belongs to a whole lot of people: our cooks, servers, dishwashers, farmers, winemakers, neighbors and everyone who has walked through our doors over the years.

Most of all, thank you to our guests. Whether you’ve joined us once or a hundred times, you’ve made it possible for us to keep doing work we genuinely love.

Congratulations to everyone recognized this year. Minneapolis–Saint Paul is a pretty special place to cook, eat together and gather, and we’re grateful to be a small part of it ❤️

Earlier this week we spent a few hours with Gary and Gayle at Green Acres Garlic Farm (Buffalo, MN).

Their Porcelain Hardneck garlic has been a staple in our kitchens since 2017. It’s fragrant, full of character and just plain delicious. It’s a reminder of how much flavor can come from healthy soil, careful hands and a little patience.

Most of the time, ingredients arrive at our back door in a box. We prep them, cook them and send them back out into the world on a plate. We spend most of the year behind the stove, but always try to make time to visit the people who grow our food. Spending a morning where the work actually begins has a way of shaping perspective!

Every bulb in those fields was planted, weeded and harvested by hand. It’s hard to walk away without a deeper appreciation for Gary and Gayle, and for all of the farmers whose work shapes what happens in our kitchen every day ❤️
