I’ve never seen the Gulf as angry as she was today… and yet somehow, she was still absolutely beautiful. 🌊💙

This morning, the tide was so high it nearly made the beach at Mainsail disappear.

As Tropical Storm Bertha moved through, we spent most of the day watching Mother Nature put on quite a show from the decks at BoujeeOnMiramarBeach .

By dinner time, the sun finally peeked out, so we wandered back down to the beach. It was incredibly windy, the surf was wild, the brown sea foam was… well… pretty gross 😆, and the double red flags meant the water was strictly for admiring.

Even on a stormy day, though, there’s something magical about this place. Every mood of the Gulf has its own kind of beauty. 💙

Last spring, I filmed this video of rip currents from the deck of our 30A Airbnb to send to my family. The video ended up being watched over 4 million times—and was even featured on Good Morning America because so many people had never actually seen a rip current before!!

I knew I needed to reshare the video here because we are heading into busy season at and rip currents happen all along the Gulf Coast. Knowing what to watch for could save a life.🩷

Rip currents can be hard to recognize when you’re near or in the water. This video was taken from a distance/elevated view, which makes it much easier to show you.

A few safety reminders:

1. Always watch the beach flags. If the flag is red, take it seriously. A red flag means “knee deep is too deep”. Don’t risk your life—or the life of someone trying to save you.

2. Watch for unusual water patterns. Avoid the calm areas as seen in the video where the ocean appears to have NO whitecaps/waves. That is the danger zone. It looks calm but it is often where water is rushing back out.

3. Never swim alone.

4. If caught in a rip current, do NOT try to swim straight back to shore. That can exhaust you quickly. Swim parallel to shore until you’re out of the current, then head back in.

5. Stay calm and float if needed. Panic is what gets people into trouble.
