An essential piece of gear in Montana.
Also necessary to maintain and retire when they expire. Time to check our canisters!

We get a lot of questions as to what to do with expired bear spray. Unfortunately there is no place to bring expired bear spray here in Flathead County (yet). DO NOT throw it away in the trash unless it has been emptied. It creates a big problem for them at the landfill when they run over full cans. Please take any expired cans and spray them somewhere in the woods, away from homes and people (when it’s not windy). We personally don’t prefer that being the only option, but right now it is. Then you can get a good feel of how to remove the cap and what to expect if you ever need to use it. After the can is empty you can put it in a ziplock bag and throw it out.

In terms of the expiration date, it’s not the capsaicin (the pepper spray) that expires, it’s the propellant. So it’s always good to err on the side of caution and get new ones when they expire because you don’t want to go to use it and have it dribble out.

*Edit: We are seeing a lot of comments about agencies/institutes that will use expired bear spray for training. We cannot speak for everyone, but most use inert bear spray (no capsaicin) made specifically for training. FWP does not take expired cans for training.
