Exciting News! Ar-Mar-Ni Gelato & Ice Cream Parlor Coming to Mitchell!!!

We're thrilled to announce that the Painted Hills Cottages are bringing a brand-new treat to town! Launching on March 15, 2025, Mitchell will welcome the Ar-Mar-Ni Gelato and Ice Cream Parlor, a sweet new addition to the community.

You might have had a sneak peek of what's to come during the Painted Hills Festival, where we briefly opened our doors and served up delicious ice cream cones and cups. Soon we'll bring you the full experience! Not only that, but we're also planning to develop the space for additional small food kiosks - so stay tuned for even more tasty surprises!

Check out some of the behind-the-scenes photos of the parlor under construction and festival fun below. Keep an eye on this space for further updates!

Wildfires and the Beauty of the Loop

The Lone Rock Wildfire, which began on July 13 and consumed approximately 137,222 acres before it was contained, burned dangerously close to sections of the loop near Service Creek to Spray along Highway 19, which winds through the John Day Fossil Beds. I drove out to assess the damage and was relieved to find that it hadn't reached Spray. Unfortunately, several homes were lost, and my heart also aches for the innocent creatures that couldn't escape. The first photo shows the remains of one that didn't survive.

I also made stops at some of my favorite hiking spots, including Foree, alongf the Overlook Trail of the Blue Basin, and Cathedral Rock.

Springtime Dreaming on a Hot Summer Day

Not long ago, spring brought cooler weather, vibrant life, and so much beauty. The land was green and fresh, with many creatures raising families and pollinating flowers.

The old Chestnut tree by the Painted Hills Cottage was the garden star and buzzed with the hum of a gazillion bees. Rosenbaum Street was a colorful, inviting, and fragrant place to stroll. Now as we are in the dog days of summer, stay cool everyone, and enjoy our cozy cottages!

Cycle of Life

The peonies in Barbara's garden are one of the most stunning floral stars from start to finish. It's mesmerizing to watch them go through their life cycle from unfolding buds and vibrant blooms to fallen petals and final decay.

From the Guestbook

It's always heartwarming when guests return for the second time around for another memorable stay at our cottages and magical gardens. We are pleased to share a lovely entry from the Heineman family, who stayed with us on 6/24 at the Painted Hills Cottage.

Early Springtime at the Painted Hills Cottages

So it begins... springtime awakens. It starts with the return of snowdrops peeking through the last vestiges of winter, followed by a symphony of colorful bulbs. As the earth begins to warm, blossoming trees unfold, accompanied by the return of insects and birds, marking the beautiful cycle of nature.

Painted Hills Vacation - Since 2008

We invite you to come and explore the dramatic Eastern Oregon landscapes of desert, rivers, and mountainous terrain with its many cliffs, canyons, and ancient rock formations. Go out and have a great adventure and then return to one of our fantastic cottages . They are a great base to explore this magnificent region. There are so many things to do and see: Go fossil hunting in one of the world’s most famous geological areas. Visit the Thomas Condon Paleontology Museum at the Sheep Rock Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument to get a glimpse of the 50 million year old history of this region. Take a scenic boat trip down the John Day River, one of the longest un-dammed rivers of the USA. In winter, go cross-country skiing or sledding in the Ochoco wilderness. Hike on hidden trails into the wilderness to experience the breathtaking beauty of Mother Nature. See antelopes, deer, coyotes, humming birds and butterflies, and enjoy the deep silence of the nights.

We have been here since 1996 when my parents fell in love with the area, especially the Painted Hills. In 2008, we created the Painted Hills Vacation Rentals with one cottage, the Painted Hills Cottage, and a smaller guest house, the Hollyhock Guest House. The Sunset Cottage - a two level house that can accommodate up to 18 guests, was added in 2015.

We have been enjoying hosting guests from around the world in the last 10 years and many returning guests have become friends. My mother Barbara is the master gardener and has created a special oasis with the gardens surrounding the cottages. They are adored and tended to with much love and expertise.

We ourselves live on a small ranch about 7 miles behind the Painted Hills with a breathtaking view on the John Day River and a big rock formation called Byrd Rock. We love the ruggedness and intensity of the nature here and hope to be able to welcome our guests for a long time on. We hope to see you here soon :-)
