Ten years ago this January, I was handed the keys to a closed church in Mitchell, Oregon — and a flickering vision became something none of us could have fully imagined.

We reopened the church. Then we opened Spoke'n Hostel — a donation-based refuge along the TransAmerica Bike Trail.

Since then, over 5,000 cyclists, motorcyclists, and travelers have found rest here. Whether you're riding the TransAm, the Central Oregon Backcountry Explorer, the Painted Hills Scenic Bikeway, the new Golden Gravel Trail, or simply rambling about — you're welcome here.

We're open for 2026. Come find us.

🚴 Have you stayed at Spoke'n? Drop a memory in the comments — we'd love to hear from our alumni.

As a public service reminder, Spoke'n Hostel will be closing for the year, November 1, 2025.
Some great riding still awaits in October so, get your reservations on the books for the 2025 season. As the season gets colder at nights we may lose our shower and laundry options, but we will still be open.
We reopen March 15th 2026 just in time for Spring Break.

We've seen some wild rigs, but this one takes the cake. With 2 pivots, this thing is like watching someone ride water. Our guest not only made the bike himself, but made all his racks and luggage. He's been all over the world on this rig.

Ingenuity, artistic expression and individuality aren't dead.

If you're traveling the Trans Am or riding the Central Oregon Backcountry Explorer, please check for road closures and evacuations due to the Marks Creek Fire. The Watch Duty app is a decent source of data, or drop us a line.

We're believing for the best as firefighters work to keep the fire contained.

PB&J Grits from the YT channel is pure gold.

1 part water to 3 parts Jiffy Cornbread mix
Nut butter
2 packets of restaurant jam

Add cornbread mix to boiling water, reduce heat, stir, add nut butter and jam. Locally sourced roadside berries to taste. Cheap power for the body!

Also, a western Oregon high stokes ramble with sons of Spoke'n ( and ) was just what a body needed.

Great gravel, some singletrack, vert, a cave, a body of water and a rich selection of thimble berries, mountain black raspberries, salal berries and blackberries... Solid choice.

Are You Tubeless?

As things warm up in Eastern Oregon, the dreaded Goat Head—also known as Puncturevine—makes its annual appearance.

Goat Heads are generally less of a problem for our road-going friends on the Trans Am, but they can be a real headache for bikepackers tackling our gravel roads.

Over the past several years, we’ve seen most gravel-grinding bikepackers switch to tubeless tires with sealant. From our own experience, we can vouch for how effective they are at preventing lost riding time due to punctures.

If you're riding the Central Oregon Backcountry Explorer or just out exploring local gravel, keep an eye out for these low, sprawling vines along hard-packed roadsides and clay paths.

If you're running tubeless with sealant, take heart—we keep a good supply of sealant at Spoke’n for you to top off.

Safe travels!
