They call it Making Wood™️

And I’m not even trying to pull one over on you (this time 🙃). “Making wood” is a common phrase up here. We spent at least 20 minutes googling why and we’ve got nothing. The only thing we know is that the phrase comes from our Finnish relatives—J’s grandfather, whose parents migrated to the Upper Peninsula from Finland. He said it often and each fall uncles, aunts, brothers, and sisters would come together and make enough wood to keep the family warm during the long winters with 25ish feet of snow each season. We’re thinking of him this time of year as we’re preparing for short days and long, cold nights.

Have you ever heard the phrase ‘making wood’? We’re hoping some of our fellow Finnish friends might have some ideas about the origin of this phrase.

Sometimes its the simple things in life.

Because, honestly, there wasn’t much pretty about the lodge back then. Peeling stucco. A patchwork of repairs. A rotting deck. The whole building felt tired — and was starting to teeter toward a safety hazard.⁠
⁠
At first, we thought we might have to tear the entire thing down. What looked like decades of water damage around some poorly replaced windows had us preparing for the worst.⁠
⁠
Luckily, it wasn’t nearly as bad as we thought.⁠
⁠
Which left us with a much better problem:⁠
⁠
What the hell do we do with a 3,000-square-foot building now?⁠
⁠
COVID was still happening. Construction costs were high. But we also knew the cost of continuing to kick the can down the road wasn’t getting any cheaper.⁠
⁠
So we pulled together a crew made up mostly of friends and family — fortunately, friends and family with a whole lot of construction experience — and made a plan.

Turns out, the secret to life is inside these four walls. 👀⁠

Not. Even. Kidding! This is our water treatment plant and it ensures every drop of water that goes to our guests is the purest, cleanest, and safest water it can be. 💧⁠

🧐 I can hear what are you thinking already..... but guys, you live on the largest, cleanest, and most beautiful body of water in the world. What gives?⁠

Geology! 🤓 All of these pebble beaches, basalt and conglomerate beauties make it hard for Mother Nature to do what she does—filter everything so that when you pump water from the ground, it’s clean.⁠

This magical little factory ensures that we don’t have to worry about the heavy rains, poor filtration or rocky soil that many in other parts of the world rely on to filter water. We are beyond lucky as a country to have safe, clean access to water and we take the charge of managing this plant very seriously. ⁠

Today and everyday, be grateful for your water. Think about where it comes from and do your part to use a little less, recycle a little more. 🌎
