BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER
This season our campers have had fun watching the various flocks of wild turkeys roam the RV park…from camper's front lawns to the playground to the harvested fields. And like clockwork, we would watch the flocks fly over the old fishing pond or into the woods to roost for the night in the tall trees. Their poor night vision makes them vulnerable to night predators. Especially during the fall and winter, most turkeys join ranks with other birds. Turkeys flock together for safety, better feeding and a complex social structure. Not unlike us humans.

We are grateful for all those that made this season a success. We truly value your business and your friendship, Thank You.

From our flock to yours…Happy Thanksgiving!

A SPOOKTACULAR WEEKEND

Earlier in October, Lake Alexander campers celebrated an early Halloween. Pumpkin Carving, Trick or Treating, Face Painting, Karaoke, Games, Hayrides, and a Potluck overflowing with a variety of delicious foods. The weather was indeed spooky... peaking at 89 degrees in the afternoon! We almost thought we were at Mardi Gras! We are so grateful for all the volunteers who made the event happen and all our wonderful campers who made the event one of our best yet!

Labor Day is Here!

Today we celebrate the contributions of our American workforce both past and present. We honor the hands that build, the hearts that care and the minds that innovate. Hard work and dedication are what built this country and what keeps it going. Whether you’re working today, camping here at Lake Alexander, spending the day celebrating with family and friends, or simply taking a break and doing nothing at all…we wish you a Happy Labor Day!

SUMMER IS STILL HERE

Campers have commented that they can’t believe how fast this summer has flown by. We couldn’t agree more. But we can’t deny it when we walk the camp and see garden flowers in late summer bloom, the signature August wetland "Cardinal Flower" popping up along our river road, butterflies emerging from their cocoons, and our garden yielding a steady vegetable bounty. No matter how you’ve spent your summer, it’s never too late to get out there and enjoying nature at her finest. We sure have!

SUMMER IS HERE!

The first day of summer is upon us! The Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere is Friday, June 20th. The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming in the prairie and the garden, and the turtles are busy sunning on the ponds and laying their eggs in the sand. In true summer fashion, we had our first days above 90 degrees this week at Lake Alexander. The camping is good, the fish are biting, and the firefly shows are just getting started. Come visit!

YOUR THANKSGIVING TURKEY’S WILD COUSIN

The Wild Turkey may be the most recognizable bird in North America, most likely because of its strong association with Thanksgiving. Yet, many people know very little about this colorful bird. Did you know that: while nearly going extinct in the early 1900, conservation efforts have brought the wild turkey population back to 6.5 million in the United States and 150,000 in Illinois.

Wild turkeys live in wooded areas and wetlands, roost in trees overnight, and feed on acorns, grasses, berries, fruits, grains, nuts, and seeds. Male turkeys can weigh over 25 pounds and are often identified by the tuft of feathers on their chest called a “beard", with females weighing half that amount. Turkeys have a complex vocabulary of over 20 different vocalizations and express emotion through their “waddle” color which hangs from their beak. Wild turkeys are skilled fliers and can reach 60 mph in short bursts. Turkeys can live up to 10 years.

At Lake Alexander we have a healthy wild turkey population, and our seasonal campers have fun catching photos of them dropping by their bird feeders. We’re grateful to the “wild cousin” for being here. Happy Thanksgiving!

A PICTURE PERFECT FALL SEASON

The wonders of fall are upon us. Beautiful reds and tans everywhere, from field to sky. The geese are flying and milk w**d seeds blowing. Our annual Halloween party was a success, and seasonal campers have buttoned up their RV's for the winter. Now the land rests and we rest.

We thank you for being here with us this year. Many of you came as strangers and left as friends as past friendships were deepened. We are grateful to each and every one of you.

HAPPY LABOR DAY!

The idea of a Labor Day was sparked in the 19th century as a means to honor our labor unions and workers across the country. Labor Day traditionally honors the American worker and those who helped change the way our country views its workforce, allowing for economic freedom and liberty.

But for many who spend their days camping, it unofficially marks the end of summer. The bird nests are empty, the hammocks are being taken down and the sun sets a little earlier each evening. Campers at Lake Alexander had a weekend of pure relaxation…tubing down the river, rocking in their camp chairs while chatting and sitting together watching the last embers of their campfire burn down. However you spent it, we hope you took some time to relax and appreciate the work you and others have done all year to keep life going in your home, your community and your life

Spectacular Perseid 2024

The Perseid meteor shower, one of the best shooting star displays of the year, is visible annually from mid-July to late August, usually peaking around August 11th. This year, the Perseids did not disappoint!

Longtime family friends and seasonal campers, the Palider family have a tradition of staying up all night during the peak of Perseids to count the number of shooting stars they see. The highest number that they have ever counted in one night was 189 meteors of all sizes.

This year they counted 102 meteors, but the highlight of the night was a dramatic appearance of the Aurora Borealis in the northern sky. A double bonus of shooting stars and northern lights produced a night of memories to not be forgotten. Thanks to Chris Palider for submitting these beautiful photos taken with her phone.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!

Lady Liberty is celebrating 248 years of freedom this Fourth of July. Enjoy your celebrations… whether it’s barbequing with family and friends or attending a local fireworks display….or like our campers enjoying relaxing under trees, fishing, boating, campfires and an old fashioned ice cream social!

However you plan to celebrate this July 4th, remember to stop and reflect on the many sacrifices made to create this democracy and those who have fought to keep our country free. Because of their contributions, we have the gifts, rights and responsibilities that come with living in these United States. Today and every day, Old Glory, flies at our camp entrance, a bit tattered from the winds but flying strong in the face of the storms it endures.
