Imagine a beautiful Monhegan day…you wander from the dock into the village…sneak a quick peek through the windows of the Lupine Gallery…stop for coffee and a chat at the Black Duck…reach the church and Monhegan House…turn left up Horns Hill…just a little bit farther now…turn left again, heading slightly down the slope …and there you are! Nestled in a quiet spot on the hillside with a view of the m
eadow below, the village across the way, the lighthouse above, and Manana just across the harbor, Holdfast House gives you the best of all worlds. Just steps away from pizza and ice cream at the Novelty in one direction and the yoga studio of Monhegan Wellness in the other – who could ask for more? Head on up to the front door and step into a large L-shaped living area, bright and airy with windows facing in all directions. Comfortably furnished, the room includes a desk conveniently located at a window looking north, out over the meadow and up to the lighthouse, all set for a writing retreat or the work that you just couldn’t leave at home. Just ahead is an open galley-style kitchen fitted out with a gas range, full size refrigerator/freezer, coffee maker (several actually!), toaster, and microwave along with dishes, pots, pans, cooking utensils and a couple of empty growlers just waiting to be filled with locally made root beer or Trap Stacker Ale at the Monhegan Brewing Company. Upstairs you’ll find a small room at the top of the stairs just waiting for you to sit a while at the window looking out at the lighthouse, perhaps diving into that book you wanted to read for the discussion group at Monhegan Library? To one side is a full bath with tub/shower. At the front of the house, the cozy twin bedroom includes a lovely window seat for quiet reflection and the double bedroom beckons with the promise of views of Manana right from bed when you open your eyes in the morning. Bring your binoculars to enjoy the birds in the meadow and the apple tree just outside the window. You’re welcome to bring along some sunflower seeds to fill the bird feeders in the yard if you’d like to keep things hopping. Children are welcome, but no pets. There is a gas heater in the living room to take out the chill on foggy days. Secure wireless high-speed internet service is provided. Cell phone reception is spotty at best as it is on most of the island. Bring your own sheets, towels and kitchen linens, and please, no smoking.
