Monona Community Visioning 2016

Monona Community Visioning 2016 Monona was selected in 2016 as 1 of 10 Iowa communities to participate in Iowa's Living Roadways year-long Community Visioning Program.

Since then Monona has completed many of its visioning projects. Stay tuned for more great news & completed projects! Monona (population 1,549 as of 2010 government census) is located on Highway 52/18 in northeast Iowa. Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, is 16 miles east along Highway 18. The community is growing, with a new development along the southwestern limits of Monona designated for industrial an

d residential development and a second residential development and two proposed roads northeast of town.

2007 COMMUNITY VISIONING: One notable project that enhanced the natural environment was the installation of a permeable-paver parking lot next to Turkey River watershed. Monona is the highest point in the county at more than 1,200 feet above sea level and is situated atop the Turkey River, Bloody Run, and Yellow River watersheds, so environmental conservation has always been important. Monona participated in Iowa’s Living Roadways Community Visioning Program in 2007 and has completed most of the projects proposed. Perhaps the two most-visible projects being the landscaping at Gateway Park and historic downtown Monona’s new streetscapes with new sidewalks and streets/infrastructure, brick pavers on Main Street bump-outs, period streetlights with matching stone column bases, wrought-iron sidewalk railings that match the streetlights, and the downtown stonework entry column that complements Gateway Park’s south entry into town.

2016 COMMUNITY VISIONING: Again in 2016 Monona was selcted to participate in Iowa’s Community Visioning Program. Please follow our visioning and project implementation journey on this page.

Just wanted again to say thanks to our grantors who supported Monona's project of adding stone trailheads, kiosks, trailmaps at two gathering-and-resting areas along MONONA BUTTERFLY TRAIL at: 1) GARDEN VIEW PARK; and, 2) BUTTERFLY GARDENS PARK.

Last night MCED received this CCFF $1,000 award certificate at an award ceremony held at Garnavillo's City Park (BTW, very nice park!). Thanks to CCFF and all of our grantors, funders, supporters, and volunteers who in 2021 helped us build these recreational amenities for our community's use and enjoyment:

* UPPER MISSISSIPPI GAMING CORP. (UMGC);
* ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH MISSION ENDOWMENT FUND;
* LEROY & COLLEEN DARBY FAMILY ENDOWMENT FUND;
* CLAYTON COUNTY FOUNDATION for the FUTURE (CCFF);
* MAE REUSSER COMMUNITY BETTERMENT TRUST;
* BUTTERFLY GARDENS COMMITTEE;
* CITY OF MONONA -- PUBLIC WORKS DEPT.;
* MONONA COMMUNITY VISIONING; and,
* MONONA CHAMBER & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, INC. (MCED).

NOTE: In the near future, we'll announce an event to bring together the whole community to celebrate this latest project that's connected to Monona's other recreational amenities along MONONA BUTTERFLY TRAIL . . . so please stay tuned and help us spread the word!

Many thanks to JIM LANGHUS & others for all of their extra hard work on this project and FISK FARM & HOME SUPPLY of MONONA for volunteering its time, labor, and equipment to help Jim move this heavy flower bucket (shown at center) from the BUTTERFLY GARDEN below up to Monona's brand new trailhead and kiosk location to the west of the gardens' entrance sign as one enters the MONONA BUTTERFLY TRAIL (caddy-corner to our awesome aquatic center!). This colorful trailhead makes a lovely, relaxing spot for you to rest along the trail. Thanks also to CROELL, INC. part of the concrete for the trailhead pads at BUTTERFLY GARDENS PARK and GARDEN VIEW PARK.

Currently, Jim and Rogeta are designing the two-sided, full-color map and donor sign. For this particular trailhead location, Jim has selected pictures of butterflies (identified by name & their larval foods) and flowers that you'll see in the gardens. Also shown on the kiosk signage will be information about the Monarchs that fill MONONA BUTTERFLY GARDENS annually on their trek from/to Mexico. FYI -- Monarchs may be coming in the next 1 - 2 weeks . . . so, please stay posted to the Butterfly Gardens page when Jim puts out the word. You won't be sorry!

More of RON HILL's construction progress on the BUTTERFLY GARDENS' trailhead rest area this week. The 2 benches (2nd photo) will be re-positioned E & W of the map kiosk to provide visitors with a comfortable respite area.

Thanks to JIM LANGHUS, you'll notice the trailhead cement pad has butterflies stamped into them, and Jim put 2 coats of stain overtop the cement, and now these little beauties really stand out.

We have great things in store for the map's flip-side, which will share Jim's nature-inspired info about our local pollinators, birds, gardens, prairies, etc. STAY TUNED . . .

Big thanks to JIM LANGHUS ~ RON HILL ~ CITY OF MONONA's RANDY EVANSON & MIKE EGAN ~ BENDA CONCRETE ~ CROELL, INC. ~ SUPERIOR BUILDING CENTER ~ MB CONSTRUCTION ~ MIELKE'S QUARRY for their work on the 2 new trailhead rest areas to provide visitors with rest areas at all 4 Monona public parks along MONONA's BUTTERFLY TRAIL.

Major thanks go to our project donors for their financial/in-kind assistance, without whom this project today would not happen for our Monona-area community's enjoyment:

* Upper Mississippi Gaming Corp. (UMGC)
* Clayton Co. Foundation for the Future (CCFF)
* Mae Reusser Community Betterment Trust (MRCBT)
* St. Paul Lutheran Church Mission Endowment Fund
* Croell, Inc.
* City of Monona
* Monona Chamber & Economic Development, Inc.
* Monona Community Visioning Committee
* Monona-area community volunteers

Today, RON HILL started building 1 of 2 new trailhead/kiosks at Butterfly Gardens @ Davis St. entrance across from the pool. Tomorrow, Ron will start building Garden View park's new trailhead/kiosk.

Soon JIM LANGHUS will be staining the Butterfly Gardens concrete trailhead to set it off and beautify the whole area. What a relaxing place this'll be with its 2 park benches and the nearby sights, smells and sounds of the Butterfly Gardens.

Wait until you see our 3' x 4' trail map that shows the entire Monona trail map with amenities on Side 1; and Side 2 shows donor names and -- thanks to JIM LANGHUS -- the pollinators, birds, flowers and plants that inhabit our Monona Butterfly Gardens. We'll keep you posted on everyone's progress & celebrate together when we're all done.

These 2 new recreational projects are part of our overall Monona Community Visioning plan. These projects were made possible by grants from Upper Mississippi Gaming Corporation (UMGC), Clayton Co. Foundation for the Future (CCFF), and Mae Reusser Community Betterment Trust (MRCBT), as well as monetary and/or in-kind donations from city of Monona, St. Paul Lutheran Church Monona, Croell Redi-Mix, Benda Concrete, and Monona Chamber & Economic Development, Inc. (MCED), who wrote the 3 grants in 2020-21, raised the funds, and is currently assisting the city's RANDY EVANSON and MIKE EGAN to finish the work per grant standards and timelines.

Thanks & great job to everyone involved!
