In the early 60’s our Boy Scout troop had the good fortune of having an adventurous scoutmaster who knew where the old Penn Mining town (off Elliott Creek/Goat Lake) was. He had visited this area when he was younger so he knew the area well.
I remember how astonished I was on how many buildings were still enact and standing, many more than original Monte Cristo town site in the 60’s, mostly likely because it was seldom visited.
Some of the the items I still remember was the original blacksmith shop with some old bellows, old hotel, an old wagon, and lots of artifacts that apparently the looters hadn’t got to yet.
It was a real treat for us young scouts to see a part of history somewhat still enact. I also remember, near the logjam outlet at Goat lake you could see the reminisce of an old barge (sunk) that was used to move items (assume ore and people) to the face of Foggy Peak (now long gone)
I hiked back up to this area in 1982 (very day Mt St. Helens blew) but the area were massively overgrown and the buildings are all gone but you could still see the foundation outlines on a few buildings.

Garda Fogg was one of our most interesting guests. Dubbed “The mayor of Monte Cristo”, she lived in Monte Cristo during her younger years. She loved the area and often corresponded with the group owners as to the plans for the place. Posted are a few letters we received from her. She visited a couple times each summer renting a room in the lodge. Could out hike most people much younger. Died at 91 years old in Olympia

Thought I'd add this photo taken ~ early 60's, Monte Cristo layout from climbing partway up Addison Mountain. Labeled the layout of cabins, lodge and creeks/rivers. The other "document" is an article from the 1970's (Seattle Times) stating what the new owners had in mind for the place after we owned it.

Down the 'timeline' (below) I mentioned the water powered Pelton wheel (330' thru a pipe via 76 creek) which powered a DC generator for the lodge and the cabins when we didn't want to burn diesel fuel. This photo is the DC generator which may still be sitting on the lodge foundation (or maybe not). Not sure what these environmental cleanup folks did as far as hauling stuff away.
