We are dedicated to the conservation of this beautiful slice of woodlands, and strive to make it a beloved destination for recreation and environmental education. The Meadow Creek Conservation Coalition is made up of 19 landowners sharing 1600 acres with a commitment to the preservation of our corner of Cumberland Plateau woodlands. We are currently battling the infestation of the Hemlock Woolly A
delgid bug which, if left untreated, will mean the doom of the hemlocks. The infestation is becoming heavy in some areas. The good news is that our hemlock stands are still in good shape and prime for saving. If you wish to help in some way with the effort to save as many hemlocks as we can, there are two things you can do:
1) We need chemical. Imidacloprid is what we use to treat trees. Bob can order the chemical cheaper through his nursery connection than we can buy it anywhere. A package is $30 and treats 7 trees that have trunks two feet through, which places each tree at about $4 to treat and the treatment lasts at least 5 years. That means a fairly large tree is under $1/year to save. The problem comes when the goal is to save 15,000 trees! However, many trees are smaller. We are going to do the best we can! We don’t want anyone to feel compelled to help in this way, but if you can and would like to sponsor a few trees, that would be great!
2) WE NEED HELP! If you can assist in the treatment of trees, there will be opportunities posted in our volunteer section, or you can contact Bob at Meadow Creek. Eventually the hope is that introduced predator beetles and western whiteflies will take over the job, but this will take time and we have to keep the stand in good shape in the meantime. Let me know if you are interested! Thank you in advance!
