This is Pete Barlow. He stayed with us the other night and then woke up for an early morning walk in the woods. And presto… he found these chanterelles. Mushrooms everywhere at VBC! Apparently our hiking trail is a mushroom picker’s dream. Yum!

Look, here’s the dealio: If you are coming through Monterey, Va., and you want a great omelette or waffle, Rose, the chef at The Curley Maple, will hook you up. The owners know what down-home country cooking is. And their building is one big photo op! An old general store with a mural fit for Instagram. Check store for hours. They cater to the weekend-ish crowd. But it’s worth a trip to Little Switzerland.

Holly and I stopped by our friend’s restaurant this morning for a snackie. The Highlander has great pizza and milkshakes. And they also have a cool little gift shop with local prezzies like local honey and maple syrup. Highland County is the maple syrup capital of Virginia. There’s also a little Visitor Center, so if you stop in you can check out what the community has to offer. Here’s a little tour for the curious at heart. Owners Valentina and Paul Meehan have a good thing going here. Check them out.
