These are petroglyphs. They’re found in most parts of the world in various forms but they are rock carvings, some dating back to over 20,000 years ago. The purpose of these carvings are mostly undetermined but it still stands these are important cultural sites that should be respected and preserved. It is a great privilege to be able to see the marks and stories past people have left. Which is why we ask if you see one of these sites you don’t touch or disturb the rock. Many of these places have sadly been disrupted and graffitied. If we all do our part these places and their importance can last a lifetime.

This species is called a stiff sunflower and it’s a part of the daisy family. The desert is home to many types of sunflowers that go by many names. Sunflowers have adapted to many environments with varying soils and temperatures. Sunflowers have provided food, oil, and building material since 3000 BCE. They mark the summertime blooming in June - September

This is Cleome Lutea Hook otherwise known as Yellow Beeplant. It's widespread to most of the western plains being identified by its yellow pedals, six long statements, and seed pods hanging below the flower. The plant can grow up to 5 feet tall and blossoms late spring to late summer. Native tribes have used this plant as a treatment for the common cold along with other medical uses. The plant provides nutrients to most desert inhabitants making it an important part of the landscape as well as being pretty.

Hi, I’m Ava. I’m Calebs daughter and I’m the new brand designer for Needles Outpost Project Expedition (NOPE). I mostly help with any marketing needs, which is why you might have noticed a style shift in the social media. I live and work in Bellingham WA at a local nonprofit and I have goals to forge a path to better access to education while pursuing a career in the sports industry. I’m excited to be able to assist in NOPE’s mission of conservation and responsible land stewardship. I hope you’ll join us in the process.

Hi, I’m Anabelle. I’m Caleb’s daughter and I work at the store from time to time. I love working at the outpost I get to meet new people and experience the desert. One of my fondest memories of the Outpost was a hike I took with my family. We took a wrong turn and ended up extending the hike by three miles. But we were together in a beautiful place. When I get older I want to be a flight attendant and travel the world but I’d love to stay and work in the outpost as long as I can.

Hi, I'm Amber, and I'm the Director of Operations. When we came to the Outpost, I immediately fell in love with not only the vast beautiful landscape, but the self sustaining lifestyle this place gifted us. There are so many special areas like the one we call home that are enjoyed by people from all over the globe who find so many different ways to take the right things away from the natural world... I feel like the least we can do is to facilitate a pathway to give back to it. We've hosted some volunteer events in the past here, bringing people together to get things done and the fellowship we've experienced during those times is tangibly special. I look forward to coordinating many more of those events and meeting new friends and spending time with the people who have already become like family that we've met here at The Outpost.

Hi, I’m Caleb, the Executive Director. Born in Texas, I stumbled upon the outpost while exploring options to relocate to the west with my wife, Amber. We managed the Outpost for a few months while we fell in love with this place and were fortunate enough to have been able to take over the lease here.. . It clicked after a particularly hard day of sewage repairs (up to my shoulders in it) . It was exhausting and some of the nastiest work I had ever done, but after I fixed it, I sat down and watched the sunset, smiling . If a day like that could end with me smiling, I had found the perfect place for me. I spend my free time hunting, fishing, hiking, and biking. My recreational activities only fuel my future plans for conservation. I have goals to guide the outpost into a sustainable future in line with its rustic history while transforming it into a tool that's used to improve both the local lands and the experience of the folks who use them. We are actively taking steps for this future, and we hope you’ll join us in our mission.
