See the Western Colorado most visitors never take the time to explore. 🌄

One of the best parts about staying at South Rim Ranch is using it as your basecamp to discover the places that rarely make the typical Colorado vacation itinerary.

Start your day with an adventure into Dominguez Canyon in the Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area outside of Delta. Red-rock canyon walls, flowing creeks, desert bighorn sheep, ancient petroglyphs and traces of the people who called this country home long before us make this one of Western Colorado’s true hidden treasures.

It’s rugged, wild and unmistakably Western. This is the kind of place where you can leave the crowds behind and experience Colorado the way we think it’s meant to be experienced.

🌽 On your way through Delta County, keep your eyes open for Olathe Sweet Corn! During sweet-corn season, roadside stands start popping up throughout the valley. Grab a dozen and take them back to the cabin—we might be biased, but we think it’s the best corn on the cob in the world.

🥪 For lunch, stop at Rocky Mountain Pantry in Delta. This little hidden gem is one of those places you probably wouldn’t know about unless a local told you. Order a sandwich and watch as the meats and cheeses are sliced fresh right in front of you. Simple, fresh and absolutely worth the stop.

From there, head toward the North Rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and experience the other side of the Black Canyon. Far fewer visitors make their way over here, and that’s exactly what makes it special.

🍷 As evening approaches, make your way into the vineyard and orchard country surrounding Hotchkiss and the North Fork Valley.

For dinner, you can’t go wrong with 476 Eatery in Hotchkiss, or turn dinner into an experience at Mesa Winds Farm & Winery, surrounded by the agricultural landscape that makes this little corner of Colorado so special.

Then take the scenic drive home to South Rim Ranch after a full day exploring a side of Western Colorado most people never see.

Dominguez Canyon → Olathe Sweet Corn → Rocky Mountain Pantry → Black Canyon North Rim → Hotchkiss Wine Country → South Rim Ranch

See what most will never take the time to explore. Discover the local best-kept secrets of Western Colorado.

Another 5 Star Review!👇 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“This cabin was an absolute delight. It was comfortable, well appointed, clean as a whistle and everything we had hoped it would be...and more. We did not expect the herd of deer grazing right in the yard. We had guests, so we gave them the main bedroom and slept in the loft, which was comfy and spacious. Also, the kitchen had very new appliances and all the pots/plates/gadgets you will need. But the VERY BEST thing about this cabin is the location. There is literally no place you could stay that would be this close to the Black Canyon entrance station...literally 7 easy miles. I also have to mention how responsive Alli was. We told her we lacked a flyswatter and had a pesty one. Literally 5 minutes later she was at our door with one, and we were able to meet her and Watson the dog. In short, we could not have been happier with our stay. If you are visiting the Black Canyon, I don't think you'll find a better place.”

A DAY AT SOUTH RIM RANCH | Stay Out Late 🌙

One of our favorite things about staying at South Rim Ranch is that there’s no reason to rush.

Take your time in the morning. Pour another cup of coffee, wander around the ranch and see what wildlife decided to stop by. Then pack up for a drive down Hwy 50 toward Cimarron, where you can get down along the Gunnison River, stretch your legs and hike the banks with the sound of the river beside you.

When you’ve had enough exploring, head back to the ranch for a late lunch. Grab a good book, kick your feet up at the cabin and enjoy having absolutely nowhere you need to be for a while.

But don’t call it a day just yet.

🌙 Tonight, we’re staying out late.

Head into downtown Montrose and park near the historic Fox Cinema Center. Leave the truck there—the rest of the evening is best enjoyed on foot. Then you have your parking spot for later 😉

Downtown has become home to some great local restaurants, all within an easy walk. Pick your favorite:

🍕 Colorado Boy Pizzeria & Brewery
🍜 MsSo
🍣 Hiro Japanese Steakhouse
🍽️ Eatery 66 North
🥂 Ray’s Corner Cafe

After dinner, walk back to the Fox, grab some popcorn and catch a movie in our classic hometown theater.

And when the credits roll, you still don’t have to head home.

Walk next door to The Rathbone Hotel & Parlor Bar, settle in for a nightcap, and enjoy one last drink downtown(responsibly) before making your way back to the quiet of the ranch.

Mountain roads. River walks. Wildlife. Good food. An old theater. A late-night cocktail.

Sometimes the best part of getting away is having a full day—and nowhere you have to be tomorrow.

Come experience Western Colorado from South Rim Ranch. 🏔️

A Dog’s Day Out from South Rim Ranch 🐾

One of our favorite things about living here is that some of the best days don’t require much of a plan.

When we have a free summer day, we load up Watson and the paddleboard and head south to Ridgway State Park—only about 50 minutes from the front door of the cabin.

We’ll start with a hike along one of the park’s dog-friendly trails, climbing above the reservoir with views of that unmistakable blue water and the San Juan Mountains in the distance. Then it’s down to the lake to get the paddleboard out and let Watson trade four paws for a day on the water.

Afterward, we make the short drive into Ridgway and grab tacos from Taco del Gnar, then take them over to the town park and find a shady spot beneath the big cottonwoods.

Eventually, we point the truck north toward home, keeping an eye out for elk along the way.

And the best part?

There’s still an evening waiting for us back at South Rim Ranch—dinner on the patio, a tired dog in the yard, the sun disappearing behind the mountains, and eventually a sky full of stars.

This is the Western Colorado we love, and when you stay at South Rim Ranch, you don’t have to leave your dog behind to experience it.

There may not be a better time to experience Western Colorado than fall.

Cool mountain mornings, warm afternoons, changing leaves, abundant wildlife, incredible sunsets, and quiet nights under a sky full of stars. And at South Rim Ranch, you can experience it all from your own private cabin just 7 miles from Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.

This isn’t just a place to sleep after a day of exploring — it’s a chance to experience a little piece of authentic Western Colorado ranch life.

*7 miles from Black Canyon National Park

*Pet friendly with a large fenced backyard

*Wildlife sightings nearly every day

*Front porch sunsets & incredible stargazing

*Private back patio & grill

*Fully equipped kitchen

*Sleeps up to 5 with a downstairs primary bedroom + upstairs loft

Then come back to the ranch, grill dinner on the patio, watch the sunset from the front porch, and enjoy the kind of quiet that’s getting harder and harder to find.

We still have a few nights available in early September and good availability throughout October. These are some of our favorite weeks of the entire year at the ranch.

Our hearts are with everyone affected by the wildfire and the brave men and women working to protect our communities. This is all too familiar as we went through this last year.

At South Rim Ranch, we’re also thinking about the families, outfitters, restaurants, shops, and small businesses that make Ouray such a special place. Summer is the heartbeat of their local economy, and many are already feeling the effects of canceled trips and uncertainty.

When officials determine it’s safe to travel, we encourage our guests and future visitors to keep Ouray on their itinerary. Grab breakfast at a local café, enjoy dinner downtown, book a jeep tour, browse the local shops, and experience everything this incredible mountain community has to offer.

Every meal, every night stayed, and every dollar spent locally helps support the people who call this place home.

We’re proud to be part of this region, and we know the resilience of these mountain communities. We look forward to welcoming guests back when it’s safe and doing our part to help Ouray recover.

In the meantime, please continue following official guidance and join us in supporting Ouray however you can. ❤️
