Something is happening behind the scenes.

Crystal Pines is the name of our second property, and the plans are now approved by the county and the infrastructure is in the ground. We’re ready to build our first unit.

When it’s finished, there will be 12 units. We’re aiming to open in 2027.

Last week our son Micah walked a group of fellow glamping operators through the land, pointing out exactly where each unit will sit. It’s one thing to see it on paper. It’s another to stand in the spot and say, “right here.”

It all started with a hunting tent.

In 2005 I bought a Davis canvas tent and set it up every fall in the mountains with my family. Elk season, coffee by the fire, the whole thing. Those were some of the best years of our family life.

In 2019, during a bedroom remodel, Wendy and I moved our bed into that tent in the backyard for a month. We liked it so much that when the remodel was done, we listed it on Airbnb just to see what would happen.

Two months later, it had earned $2,440.

Today Monument Glamping is eight units on Rickenbacker Ranch, with tents and container homes, real beds, and private hot tubs. The idea hasn't changed: a canvas tent, a real bed, and nature without the campground chaos.

Eight years ago I was a struggling public school teacher who put a tent up in my backyard.

Today that idea is Monument Glamping: real beds, private hot tubs, fire pits, and creekside quiet on private property, with no campground chaos.

This week we're at the Glamping Show with a booth built to feel like one of our tent pergolas. Micah built it from my concept, and it's meant to pull people into the Monument Glamping story. Wendy and I have always loved hosting people, and we still pinch ourselves that we get to do it every day.

Big news: Monument Glamping is heading to the Glamping Show Americas in Denver — starting tomorrow!

We'll be at Booth #224 with three handouts and some merch, sharing how a small piece of land turned into a real business. One handout breaks down the actual numbers on one of our tents: a $2,400 investment that's already brought in $26,446 this year.

the Colorado Springs/Denver area seen our ad in Our Community News?

It says "Reconnect Right Here At Home," and we mean that literally. About half the people who stay with us are staycationers, mostly from within an hour or two. They don't need a flight or a week of planning. They need some time to bust out of the apartment.

That's the whole idea. A real bed. Your own fire pit. No camping gear to dig out of the garage. Just bring your favorite person.

We didn't start with hot tubs like this.

We started with a metal stock tank, a hose, and a good dog for company. Then a portable inflatable spa on the deck — good enough for a season, but you could feel the "good enough" in it. Then a real soaking tub, freestanding, bubbles and candlelight, which felt like progress until you realized one person fits comfortably and two is a squeeze.

Every one of those was a step. None of them was the answer.

The answer was to just build it right: real, plumbed, 4-person jetted hot tubs at every unit. Not a compromise, not a workaround — the actual thing. Jets that work. Room for two people to sit across from each other instead of taking turns. Hot water that stays hot.

It took a few tries and a few years to learn that lesson, but it's why every stay now includes the real version instead of the practice version.

Monument Glamping just got some really nice news: we've been named one of the (American Glamping Association's) Top 50 Glamping Vendors for 2026.

We didn't campaign for this one. It came from an outside group that looks at glamping operations across the country — and picked us.

Honestly, it's a nice confirmation of something we already believe: you don't need a big portfolio of properties to do this well. You need one property, done right. Real beds, private hot tubs, your own space along the creek, and owners who actually show up and take care of it.

We'll have our badge up proudly, and we're heading to Glamping Show Americas later this month to celebrate it in person.

Colorado does this sometimes. Big downpour rolls through, and just when you think the day's washed out, the sky splits open and hands you this.

Rainbow over Monument Glamping, tents still standing, creek still running below. Fifteen minutes earlier it was pouring. Now it looks like this.

This is the part of glamping you can't get from a hotel window. You're close enough to the sky to actually watch the weather change.

Scroll container home pages long enough and you start to notice something: most of them aren't real.

Ten shipping containers stacked at impossible angles. Cantilevered boxes hanging over cliffs. Glass walls where structural steel should be. AI made them, and nobody could ever build them — or sleep safely in them if they did.

Here's a real one.

The Classic is a single 10x20 container. That's it. One box, finished well. Inside: a real bed, an electric fireplace, a little kitchenette, and a window that opens onto green. Outside: your own deck, your own fire pit, your own hot tub under a Colorado sky that goes deep blue right before dark.
