The Hatchet Resort in Moran, Wyoming, began as an 1880s homestead and cattle range. Kansas oilman W.B. Campbell later built the iconic hand-crafted log motel in 1954. Listed with the Teton County Historical Preservation Board, it remains a rustic gateway near Grand Teton and Yellowstone.
John D Rockerfeller did not acquire the Hatchet Resort (or Hatchet Ranch) in Jackson Hole for his conservation projects. The historic Hatchet Ranch on the Buffalo Fork was instead purchased by investor D.E. Skinner from Jack Shive in 1919, while Rockefeller’s subsequent 1920s–1930s land acquisitions for Grand Teton National Park were conducted separately through the Snake River Land Company.
The "Standard" sign which hangs in the Whetstone Lodge on campus at the Hatchet Resort, is the original Standard Oil Sign that stood at the resort in the 1950's and is reminiscent of the time that Rockerfeller acquired acreage which eventually formed part of Grand Teton Natonal Park.
