Crested Butte Ballot Measure 2B — What Property Owners Need to Know

This November, voters in the Town of Crested Butte will consider Ballot Measure 2B, a proposed annual excise tax on qualifying non-primary residences and vacant residential lots.

This is an important issue for our community—and especially for Crested Butte property owners.

I’ve put together an article explaining:
✓ What Ballot Measure 2B proposes
✓ Who would be subject to the tax
✓ Why the Town says additional revenue is needed
✓ Concerns being raised by second homeowners and opponents
✓ The role second homeowners play in our community
✓ My personal perspective on the proposal

My wife Francene and I were second homeowners in Crested Butte for 10 years before making this our full-time home in 2009. We understand firsthand that Crested Butte can feel like home long before it becomes your primary residence.

Whether you live here full-time or part-time, I encourage you to understand what is being proposed and the arguments surrounding it.
