🌳 There is a town in Lebanon County with no fences, hardly any streets, and porches where the front yards should be.

Mount Gretna started in the 1880s as a railroad man's idea. Robert Coleman, from one of the great Pennsylvania iron families, had a narrow gauge line running through the woods and decided the woods themselves were worth visiting. A campmeeting arrived, then a Chautauqua, then hundreds of little Victorian cottages built shoulder to shoulder under enormous oaks with walking paths between them instead of roads. People came for the summer, took the train in, and stayed until the leaves turned.

Most places like that got paved, subdivided, or torn down. Mount Gretna did not. The cottages are still there, still painted in colors nobody would dare use on a normal street, still with gingerbread trim and screen doors that slam. There is a lake with a sand bottom, a playhouse that has been putting on shows for over a century, and an ice cream place that half of central Pennsylvania will argue about. In August the whole place smells like warm pine.

It is one of the few Pennsylvania towns that seems to have decided at some point to simply stop changing, and then made that stick. Where is the place you go where time runs a little slower than it does at home?
