Montgomery County Judge Bart Williams has issued a county wide burn ban effective 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 9, until further notice. This burn ban prohibits burning of any kind while in effect. Conditions throughout the county are dry and getting worse with the excessive heat. Please report any fires observed within the county.

Lake Ouachita’s name originates from the Choctaw Indian language, specifically from the words “Owa Chito,” which when transliterated into French became “Ouachita.” ☀️

In Choctaw, “Owa” signifies hunt or hunting, and “Chito” means big. Therefore, “Owa Chito” translates to “big hunt” in English. This name reflects the historical significance of the area as a place rich in wildlife and resources, where hunting was an important activity for the Choctaw people and later for settlers in the region. 🏹⛰️🌊🐟

Today, Lake Ouachita stands as a testament to this heritage, offering visitors a serene and natural environment to enjoy water activities, fishing, and the beauty of its surroundings.
