Good morning, Mountainair!
First, I want to apologize for the very long process that seemed like it took forever. We agree, it did, and for that, we are sorry. I take full blame as I was unavailable for a week or so after the deadline so even the choosing of the winner was delayed. I know many people thought it was due to us waiting "for additional entries", but I promise you, it was not. All the entries were submitted before the deadline. The winning submission was submitted by the March 11th deadline.
Second, we then had to submit for approval with the State of NM Clean & Beautiful Grant. Unfortunately, that process also took some time. They wanted us to remove the "Keep Mountainair Beautiful" lettering and instead add the "Keep New Mexico True" logo, which the artist complied. After that was done, it went for approval to their graphic designer, who wanted to change the sign and remove the "cowboys" and the "train" to which I disagreed. The reason this particular billboard was chosen was because it was a beautiful design and included multiple aspects of our history. When I disagreed, they had the artist remove the "Keep New Mexico True" logo. These changes would have been requested from the state for any winning design.
I was adamant against changing the design because I felt this was the design that made the most sense. Thankfully, I received word yesterday, that the design was finally approved as shown here. I notified the winner Paula Houtz back when her design was chosen. I appreciate Paula's willingness to make the changes the state was requiring, including going back to basically the original design. I have made contact with P&M Signs and we have began the process of getting this onto a large sign. We want to thank every artist who submitted a design. We loved going through them all.
We again thank you for your cooperation, your patience and your understanding. Congratulations Paula Houtz!
