Why windmills made sense out here. The Sandhills sit on one of the largest aquifers in the country, close enough to the surface that a simple rod pump could reach it. Pair that with wind that rarely quits, and you've got a water system that runs itself.

But how does it work?

The blades catch the wind and spin a shaft at the top of the tower. Gearing turns that spin into a straight up-and-down motion, driving a steel rod straight down the well casing.

At the bottom, a small piston pump does the work. Every downstroke pushes water through a check valve. Every upstroke lifts that column of water a little higher. Do that a few dozen times a minute and water climbs steadily up the pipe into the stock tank for livestock or irrigation.

That's really the whole reason windmills covered this part of Nebraska for over a century. They were cheap to put up, and cheaper to keep running — no fuel, no engine, nothing you couldn't fix yourself with tools already in the barn.

Alright, one more thank you post since we're full of gratitude.

Thank you to our members and guests, who chose to spend some of their best golf days in the middle of the Nebraska Sandhills. Thank you to our grounds crew, who brought the Red and the White to life every morning, and to our staff, whose care showed up in every meal, every room, and every warm welcome at the door.

Places like Dismal River are made by the people who show up for them. This year, that was all of you, and we don’t take it for granted.

From all of us here, thank you. We can’t wait to welcome you back for en even better year in 2027!

And that’s a wrap on the incredible 2026 golf season at Dismal River Club. Thank you to all who helped make it special; our members, guests, and staff.

We’ll see you in May 2027 for golf and we look forward to seeing you this fall and winter for our pheasant hunt season.

Today marks the final day of the 2026 golf season at Dismal River. The White Course and the Red Course are both closing for the winter, and the pins won't go back in the ground until spring.

It's been an amazing season out here. Members and guests who came back two and three times, and a few who made it out for the first time this year and got to see what the Sandhills look like from a tee box.

Closing day always has its own feel — one more pass through the routing, one more read on a green you've played a dozen times, knowing the course sits quiet until spring. The grounds crew has already started the work that keeps it that way: protecting the turf, prepping the course to come back strong next May.

But golf closing doesn't mean Dismal River does. Pheasant season is in full swing and runs through April, the lodge stays open, and the dining room keeps serving straight through winter. There's still plenty of reason to be out here — just less of it on the fairway for a while.

To our members and guests — thank you for spending part of your year with us. Some of you have been coming since the beginning. Some of you found us for the first time this year. Either way, we're glad you were here.
