Registration is officially open for Camp Sunflower 2026: Q***rious Cryptids!

This summer, q***r youth from across Kansas (and beyond!) will gather for a week of adventure, connection, creativity, and camp traditions - with a mysterious twist. From legendary creatures to legendary friendships, we can’t wait to see what we discover together.

This year's summer camp will be July 6th-11th. Camp Sunflower’s summer camp is open to q***r youth and allies who will be in 7th–12th grade in Fall 2026, with a Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program for ages 18–21.

Spots fill up every year, so be sure to reserve your spot soon!

Camp Sunflower operates on a pay-what-you-can model, and no one will be turned away because of cost.

This month, our Virtual Village conversations are focused on gender-affirming care.

On Wednesday, March 11 from 7–8 PM, we’ll hear from Amanda Mogoi, APRN, FNP-C, owner of M-Care Healthcare in Wichita. Amanda is a Family Nurse Practitioner with extensive training in LGBTQ+ healthcare and gender-affirming care. She’ll share information, answer questions, and help families better understand what gender-affirming care can look like.

After the presentation, there will be time for conversation and connection with other Village families.

Virtual Village is a monthly online gathering for parents and caregivers of q***r youth, and for q***r parents, to learn, share experiences, and support one another.

This weekend, we had the incredible privilege of welcoming filmmaker Sea Sombar to connect with Camp Sunflower youth and staff.

Sea is traveling across the United States on a powerful mission: to gather the stories of trans youth in all 50 states and bring those voices into the light through a documentary project called Transcribe.

Their belief is simple and true - personal storytelling is one of the most powerful ways to bridge divides.

Across the country - and right here in Kansas - the lives and futures of trans young people are being debated and legislated, often without their voices present. Through this project, Sea is working to ensure trans youth are heard - on their own terms.

Several Camp Sunflower campers and staff had the chance to sit down with Sea this weekend to share their experiences and become part of this important story. We are deeply grateful to them for their courage and openness.

A huge thank you as well to M-Care Healthcare for supporting this work by generously offering their beautiful space (and murals!) for filming.

Sea has already begun collecting powerful stories, and she still has a long road ahead to reach every state. Travel, equipment, and storing hundreds of hours of interviews all require support from people who know why these stories matter.

If you’re able, please consider contributing to help bring this project to life.

Every story gathered helps build a fuller picture of what it means to be a trans young person in America today, and helps ensure these voices are part of the conversation about the future.

Attorney Q&A on SB 244 - Tonight at 7PM (Zoom)

Have questions about what SB 244 actually means for your family? You’re not alone.

Tonight from 7–8PM, Camp Sunflower’s Virtual Village will host a conversation with an attorney who will break down:
• What the new law does
• What it does not do
• Practical considerations for families
• Steps you can take moving forward

There’s been a lot of noise and confusion. This is a chance to get clear, accurate information - and to ask your questions directly.

Virtual Village is our online support group for parents and caregivers of q***r youth and q***r parents. It’s a space to learn, connect, and support one another.

(Parents and caregivers only. We ask that youth and others not attend so adults can speak openly.)

The link will be sent this evening!

Join us tonight. We’re stronger together. 🌻

Parenting q***r kids - or parenting as a q***r person - can feel heavy sometimes. You don’t have to navigate it alone.

This Wednesday, we’re launching Virtual Village, a free online parent support group through Camp Sunflower, expanding our in-person groups in Wichita and Hutchinson so more families can join.

Wednesday, Feb. 11 from 7-8 PM CT on Zoom

Moving forward, every 2nd Wednesday and 4th Monday from 7-8PM will have a Virtual Village. The group is facilitated by student therapists from Friends University, who also support our in-person Village group in Hutchinson and bring experience in thoughtful, community-centered group facilitation.

Q***r & Here: Chappell Roan’s Midwest Princess Project 🌻

Pop star Chappell Roan just launched the Midwest Princess Project -- a new fund supporting trans and q***r youth. The project, announced on her 2025 tour, has already raised $400,000 for community organizations across the country, including right here in the Midwest.

Chappell’s hometown roots and bold q***r joy are at the heart of her work -- and that’s what we love most. She’s proving that change doesn’t just happen on the coasts; it blossoms in the middle of the map, too.

At Camp Sunflower, we see that same magic every day -- q***r youth finding belonging, parents building support, and our Kansas community growing brighter together.

If Chappell’s story inspires you, keep the ripple going: become a monthly subscriber and help us keep creating joyful, affirming spaces for q***r youth right here at home.

There’s something special about mornings at Camp Sunflower. The air is cool, the dew still clings to the grass, and the whole world feels like it’s stretching awake together. Some campers and staff start the day with our optional Mental Health Minute--a chance to ground in their bodies, connect with how they’re feeling, and learn a skill to carry through the day. Others join in afterward as everyone gathers in the dining hall for breakfast, filling the room with laughter, chatter, and the soft hum of a community waking up together.

It’s not fancy. It’s not perfect. But it’s real. Every smile, every inside joke, every awkward first conversation that slowly turns into friendship--that’s the heartbeat of camp.

At Camp Sunflower, mornings remind us that belonging doesn’t have to be loud to be powerful. Sometimes it’s just the quiet knowing that you’re surrounded by people who get you--exactly as you are.

🌻 Q***r Roots: Leslie Feinberg’s Fierce Love and Liberation

Leslie Feinberg (1949–2014) was a revolutionary voice for q***r and trans liberation long before the world had language for it. A proud butch, transmasculine le***an, and lifelong activist, Leslie’s words gave power to generations searching for their reflection. Their groundbreaking novel Stone Butch Blues became a lifeline for countless q***r and trans people--offering honesty, solidarity, and hope in a world that often refused to see us.

Feinberg’s activism was never separate from love. They fought fiercely for workers, people with AIDS, racial justice, and trans rights--reminding us that liberation is always collective. Their life teaches what we strive for at Camp Sunflower: a community where every young person can exist fully, joyfully, and unapologetically in their truth.

At camp, when we honor our roots, we honor Leslie--their courage, their tenderness, and the path they cleared for all of us to grow in the light.
