A piece of Ozark history you can still hike to today.

Some of these are photos I took several years ago while hiking to Granny Henderson’s Cabin in the Ponca Wilderness near the Buffalo River.

Eva “Granny” Henderson and her husband Frank cleared this land and built their cabin in the early 1900s. They raised cattle, worked the surrounding fields, and lived a remarkably self-sufficient life here. After Frank died in 1959, Granny stayed on by herself, hauling water from the river and nearby springs and continuing to live without electricity, indoor plumbing, or even a telephone. She became well known to people traveling the Buffalo River for her kindness and hospitality. National Park US Forest Service - Ouachita National Forest

One of the things that fascinated me most when I visited was upstairs. Portions of the walls were still covered with old newspapers that had been used as wall covering many decades ago.

The close-up photo is one I took of an old Chrysler “50” advertisement still attached to the wall. I recently researched it and found the same advertisement in a 1926 newspaper. The Chrysler 50 was a four-cylinder automobile advertised as capable of more than 50 mph, with prices starting around $750.

Think about that for a moment: that advertisement was hanging on the wall while Granny Henderson was still living and working on this remote Ozark homestead.

Today the cabin remains standing in the Ponca Wilderness and can be reached by trail. From our Windstorm Cabin in Marshall, it’s about 69 miles away, making it a very doable day-trip adventure for guests wanting to explore deeper into Buffalo River country.

I’m definitely adding Granny Henderson’s Cabin to our Parker Creek Bend Cabins Experiences & Hikes recommendations.

The Ozarks aren’t just beautiful. Sometimes you can literally walk into their history. Link to a great article about Granny Henderson:

We've been working diligently on revamping our website for a richer, better guest experience and this is one of the newly developed features called our Experience page. A guest, or potential guest can fill out a brief form indicating their interests and/or what they would like to do while staying at one of our cabins. Our AI backed platform will use that information and information about the area being visited to generate a personalized suggested itinerary. Feel free to visit our website and try it out!

This is a really cool article about the abandoned zinc mining town of Rush, Arkansas which is about 27 miles from our Windstorm cabin in Marshall. I've hiked this trail several times and the scenery is great, especially the old structures that are still standing. If you are an avid hiker you will enjoy the Rush Mountain Mining Loop trail. ~ Rich

This is Parker Creek Recreation Area which is immediately adjacent to our cabin property. In the second image from Google maps you can see the location of the cabins relative to the recreation area. After a day at the Crater of Diamonds State Park, Lake Greeson has a swimming area just halfway into the recreation area for cooling off or a boat launch for boating activities.

This photo is part actual and part AI rendered. The fire pit actually exists. A gazebo will be going in the spot where this AI generated one is. This is the planned upgrade for guests of the Codex cabin. It will hopefully be ready before the end of October.

Work begins next week to create a new pad for a covered pavilion at the Codex cabin. The first two images are rendered by AI to give an idea of what it will look like. The third image shows where the pavilion and outdoor area will be.

It will have a 6-person hot tub on one end and a picnic table on the other. A BBQ grill and fire pit will be adjacent to the gazebo. This is a complete makeover and relocation of the outdoor area for the cabin, making it even more family friendly. Unlike many vacation rentals, we welcome family gatherings and want to create a more enjoyable use of the property.

This project should be completed in the coming weeks.

🎉 COMING-SOON SPECIAL OFFER 🎉

Be among the first to enjoy the Codex Cabin’s new covered pavilion and hot tub!

The first 5 guests to book two or more nights for dates after the new pavilion opens will receive $50 off their stay.
