The Town of Murphy and Cherokee County Tourism Development Authority will kick off the Independence Day holiday with two free community events at Konehete Veterans Park ahead of the larger America 250 Heritage Festival celebration on July 4.

The festivities begin Thursday, July 2, with a free family movie night featuring Disney's "Zootopia 2." Bounce house activities will open at 5 p.m., and the movie will begin at approximately 9:15 p.m.

The celebration continues Friday, July 3, with Cherokee County's first-ever drone show. The free event will take place at dark and will feature a high-tech aerial display honoring America's heritage and freedom.

These events lead into Cherokee County's America 250 Heritage Festival on Saturday, July 4, in downtown Murphy. The festival will run from 4 p.m. until dark and will feature live music, cultural performances, family activities, food vendors, local shopping opportunities, and a celebration of the nation's 250th birthday.

The evening will conclude with a fireworks display launched from downtown Murphy, providing some of the best viewing opportunities right in the heart of town.

Together, the movie night, drone show, America 250 Heritage Festival, and downtown fireworks will create three days of family-friendly activities celebrating the community, its heritage, and America's 250th birthday.

Lake Santeetlah is about a one hour drive from Persimmon Creek RV Park in Murphy, NC. The perfect day trip!

In Western North Carolina, Lake Santeetlah is one of the most peaceful and untouched mountain lakes in the state, tucked deep in Graham County and wrapped by the Nantahala National Forest. Its 76 miles of shoreline stay mostly wild, with about 80 percent of the lakefront protected as Forest Service land. The lake was formed in 1928 after Santeetlah Dam was completed on the Cheoah River, creating a clear mountain reservoir that covers roughly 2,900 acres. Its name is often tied to the meaning “blue waters,” which fits the green-blue color that reflects the ridges around it. Some areas reach more than 200 feet deep, giving the lake a dramatic mountain feel. Cheoah Point Recreation Area offers a beach, campground, picnic spots, fishing, boating, and a year-round boat launch. The lake is also known for bass, walleye, crappie, bream, and lake trout, while bald eagles, ospreys, and black bears are often seen in the surrounding forest. Just north of the lake, U.S. 129 becomes the famous Tail of the Dragon, one of the curviest roads in the country.
