The South Carolina coast is home to one of the most interesting old castles in the southeast. Atalaya Castle feels like a forgotten fortress hidden in the dunes of Huntington Beach State Park. Built in the 1930s by millionaire philanthropist Archer Huntington for his sculptor wife Anna, this strange, Spanish-style stronghold has over 30 rooms, iron-barred windows, and a 40-foot tower that once held a water tank. You can wander through palm-lined courtyards, see Anna’s old studio where she sculpted with live bears and birds, and peek into tiled kitchens, servants’ quarters, and vaulted galleries. The Atlantic wind whips through the ironwork, and the echo in its empty halls gives it an eerie, timeless feel you won’t forget.
