The Bodie Island Lighthouse has served as an active aid to navigation for over 150 years by alerting mariners to the hazards of the Graveyard of the Atlantic through its painted day-marker and flashing light. Come see the first order Fresnel lensesโ flash pattern in action during evening and full moon climbs. Evening climbs occur each Tuesday until October 7th. The final full moon climb of the season is October 6th.
During a 30-minute tour, visitors will have the opportunity to ascend the 219 steps of the lighthouse to the balcony, following the footsteps of generations of lighthouse keepers. Upon arriving at the balcony, visitors will be rewarded for their efforts with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapeโs twinkling lights. Perhaps even accompanied by a full moon!
Evening climb and full moon tour tickets will go on sale on www.recreation.gov at 7AM the day of the climb. Advanced reservations are not available. Just like our daily lighthouse climbs between April and October, there are only 8 people allowed per time slot.
The lighthouse grounds are open 24-7, so even if you can't make it for a climb, you can come check out the lighthouse at work any evening starting right around sunset!
