Today we say goodbye to a father and son team; Brett & Chandler, their next stop is NOC where they will resupply and spend a night at the Rufus Morgan Shelter. Brett has recently retired from the military (an ex Airborne Warrior and also has a second son serving in Fort Bragg) they hope to finish the trail by early August. Brett is scheduled to go back to college under the Military resettlement program and in his spare time wants to become a pilot, you just can’t keep these warriors still. From all the staff at Nantahala Lodge, we thank you for your service to our country and wish you all the success in your life changing adventure, total respect.

We say goodbye to Bruce, one of our Thru-hiker hopefuls, Bruce is a commercial lawyer who helps small business owners sustain and develop their businesses through tough times. He is in the process of writing a book about the Appalachian Trail ‘Platinum Blazing’ a lighthearted book on where hikers can find great accommodation and experience local cuisine. Today he heads towards the Great Smokey Mountains in search of those hidden gems. Thank you for staying at Nantahala Mountain Lodge, we look forward to your book being published (we shall have a copy in the lounge).

We say trails to Robert (Windjammer) today; dropped him off at Telico Gap on his way to NOC. This year we have been so fortunate to have the privilege of taking care of lots of veterans; Robert is an ex Naval Serviceman and has sailed around the world proudly carrying the American flag. We say goodbye to Darrin who came into the Lodge on our first day of opening. Having hiked in rain for three days he was wet, cold and hungry. We assisted him by opening up our heated mud room and dried-out his gear, shoes and sodden clothing, while he slept in a comfortable bed with freshly laundered sheets; life is good! After a breakfast of sausage, potatoes, eggs and bagels with cream cheese Wiggy took him back to Burningtown Gap trailhead, where we bid him farewell to continue his challenge to unlock the beauty of big Katahdin. Thank you or your service to our country….total respect.
