Why does Nantucket look like Nantucket?
The answer is hiding in plain sight.
Look down. You’re walking through history. Nantucket still has miles of historic cobblestone paving, alongside old granite curbs, flagstones and other street materials that form part of the island’s protected historic landscape.
They weren’t always gray. The island’s cedar shingles naturally weather over time, creating the soft silver-gray exterior now so closely associated with Nantucket.
Whaling shaped more than the harbor.
During Nantucket’s 19th-century whaling boom, sea captains, merchants and shipowners built many of the substantial homes that still define streets such as Main and Orange today.
Next time you walk into town, look a little closer.
Nantucket has a way of leaving its history right in front of you.
