Natchitoches was founded in 1714, four years before New Orleans, which makes it the oldest permanent settlement in the entire Louisiana Purchase territory. 🏛️ The town sits along Cane River and was established as a French trading post, built to secure trade routes and keep an eye on Spanish territory just across the border.

Walking the historic downtown today, the brick storefronts and iron balconies along the riverfront still follow much of the original colonial layout. 🕯️ The town became widely known decades later as the filming location for Steel Magnolias, but its actual history runs far deeper than that, through French, Spanish, and Creole influence that shaped it long before Hollywood ever showed up.

There is something worth sitting with in the fact that Louisiana's oldest town is not New Orleans. It is a small river town in the northwest part of the state that most visitors drive past on their way somewhere else. 🌾 Have you ever visited Natchitoches, and did you know it predates New Orleans by four years?

Most people mispronounce it. It is NACK-uh-tish. And Natchitoches, Louisiana has been here long enough to have heard every version of your attempt and to forgive you for it entirely. 😄

Founded in 1714 by the French explorer Louis Juchereau de St. Denis, Natchitoches is the oldest permanent European settlement in the Louisiana Purchase territory, older than New Orleans, older than every other city in the state. It sits on the Cane River, which was once the main channel of the Red River before the river shifted, leaving Natchitoches on a long still lake that now defines the character of the downtown.

The Christmas Festival of Lights on the Cane River draws visitors from across the state and beyond every December, but the town is worth visiting in every season. The historic district is one of the best-preserved collections of 18th and 19th century Creole and Creole cottage architecture in the South, and the meat pie has been a local signature dish since the French colonial period. 🥧 Have you spent time in Natchitoches?
