Willard Richards was a physician, historian, and devoted friend of Joseph Smith. Known as “the man who never left Joseph Smith,” Willard Richards was present during some of the most pivotal moments in Nauvoo’s history — including the final days at Carthage Jail, where he miraculously survived unharmed.

Beyond his loyalty, Richards played a vital role in preserving Nauvoo’s story. He carefully recorded journals, letters, and accounts that help historians understand daily life, faith, and sacrifice along the Mississippi River in the 1840s.
