Do you recognize this black bird skimming the water? It's a black skimmer, of course!

The black skimmer has an uneven bill, but for a purpose. The long, lower mandible plows the water and the upper mandible snaps down when contact is made with a fish. It finds food by touch, not sight. Skimmers are the only birds in the world that feed in this manner!

Nicknames for the black skimmer include scissorbill, razorbill, and cutwater. They are also nicknamed "sea dog" because of the barking sound they make as they glide over the water's surface.

Black skimmers are a permanent resident in our area. Do you have any cool photos? Post them below!
